Okay, after some pencil-editting madness, I gave up on the dithered version of the shrunken 15x15 puzzle grid. I then tried just cropping portions of it to create icons. A partial crossword grid is the only icon ever to look worse with a border.

Edit: New icon made by skutir has been uploaded, correctly replacing the previous one with same keywords.

Beautiful! I have no idea why it wouldn't work for me. I believe I'll go ahead and use that, as it's certainly better than what I hacked up.

Perhaps a 13x13 would work better as an icon.

Possibly, but it's a less standard size.
