Okay, after some pencil-editting madness, I gave up on the dithered version of the shrunken 15x15 puzzle grid. I then tried just cropping portions of it to create icons. A partial crossword grid is the only icon ever to look worse with a border.

Edit: New icon made by skutir has been uploaded, correctly replacing the previous one with same keywords.
