“Always with the chivalry, Angel. You’re really good at it.” She took his arm, and almost giggled like a little girl. She held it in, though. They really did need to check out the vampire nest. She had grabbed the piece of paper, and put it in her pocket. She didn’t know if she should grab weapons or not, so she had a stake in the band of her jeans, just in case. She had a feeling that whatever this place was that Giles was sending her would either bring up a whole bunch of questions or a dead end ( ... )

They had gotten themselves worked up for a dead end of sorts. It wouldn’t be the end.

“I don’t know, Angel. I gave you the paper, remember? I don’t know where anything is around here.” That wasn’t meant to be snarky. She sighed and grabbed the paper back out of her jeans and handed it to Angel.

“Is it right?”

Giles wouldn’t just send them to a dead end if he didn’t have a reason. There was a reason. She just didn’t know what exactly that reason was. Setting her bags down, she walked around trying to scope out the dusty area. It was really weird. It was a nice place, though.

“I guess I just call Giles when we get back. There’s really nothing more to do now.”

Angel took the paper, but shook his head. "No, Buffy-- I didn't mean I didn't think we're at the right address. This whole thing doesn't seem right." He sighed.

"Yeah. It's the middle of the night in England, might as well wait 'til morning."

Then Angel realized what that meant.

It was barely ten o'clock, and their 'work' was over for the night. It was time for their 'date.' Angel nodded toward her bags and asked, "You wanna put on your new clothes, now? It's pretty chilly out."

And he was back to being nervous. He'd forgotten what a roller-coaster of emotions it was, being around Buffy all the time.

“Oh. Well you’re right. I don’t know what’s wrong about this. Giles wouldn’t just give me a dead end. There’s a reason he sent me here. We’ll just have to…come back to it after I call him and figure out the deal.”

Date, Date, Date, Date, Date. This was what was going on in Buffy’s head. Plus, hey! New clothes.

“Yeah. Good idea.”

She made a turn around motion with her finger. She was so going to change right there, and he wasn’t allowed to see her strip down…just yet. She couldn’t deny the fact that there was thorough enjoyment in her face, just plain ol’ watching his. He hadn’t seen her naked since she was seventeen years old. Not that she was stripping all the way down or anything. But still. New clothes. She was going to wear them.

When he finally turned around, and she got all situated, she walked over to his side, with a little bounce to her step.

“So is it still a surprise, or can you tell me what we’re doing now? Huh? Huh?”

She poked his arm.

Angel turned around, and for good measure, firmly closed his eyes. It wasn't like she was taking everything off, or even like he'd never seen her naked before... years. It had been years, and there was still so much tension between them, and it was only going to get worse, and this was such a bad idea, they should just have sex and get it over with--

Ugh! He was rambling in his own head. And he knew, from experience even, that when they did finally make love, they wouldn't just get over it. They'd never wanna get out of bed, they'd never want to leave each other; he especially wouldn't want to leave Buffy's side, too afraid that history would repeat itself somehow, and he'd find himself alone, that this had all just been a dream, some delusion or hallucination he'd created out of loneliness ( ... )

Her eyes lit up. That was an awesome idea! She’d never actually ridden in one of them before. It definitely wasn’t her style. Relationships weren’t her style either, look where that was taking them. It would be a nice change. An adorable nice change.

She started walking with him. Her hand sort of fit perfectly in his elbow. Like it was meant to be there.

“Okay!” She said with a little too much enthusiasm. She was wearing new clothes, and she was headed to Central Park with Angel. The night couldn’t have gotten better if she tried to make it better. The night wasn’t even close to being over. There were plenty of hours of night time left. It got her thinking that it was winter. Meaning more night than day ( ... )

He watched her face as she smiled happily. "Okay!"

"Really?" He couldn't help asking.

Her question about dinner surprised him. "N-no... Oh. Well, I don't need food, but, I can eat it." He just couldn't taste it, and had always found it rather pointless to pretend. "It's not like I've never eaten out before. Besides, aren't you getting hungry?"

He wasn't planning on playing 'human' for her, because she already knew it wasn't true, but he wanted to do everything an ordinary couple would, and that definitely included eating out.

Couple. Wow. That's what they were, now. It was beginning to really sink in, but was just as surprising as when they'd suggested trying it.

The cab ride over was pretty quick, and soon, they were entering the park, and Angel spotted one of the hansom cabs, its driver waiting by his horse. He pointed it out to Buffy. "What do you think?"

She smiled at him. He stammered. It was cute. She just beamed. She hung around him enough, and she hung around Spike enough to know that vampires didn’t like food. It was gross to them. She wanted to make him comfy, but she was getting hungry…whatever they were doing. She didn’t want to ruin it. But she also didn’t want him to suffer because of her. It was just another human vampire complication that they just had to deal with ( ... )

She didn't mind not going out to eat. It didn't really matter to him, if she didn't care... "Alright, why don't we head back to the hotel after this, order something, and, find a movie to watch, or something." He was going to end up watching her eat, no matter what they did--not that he minded, he just didn't want to make her feel uncomfortable, not-eating in a restaurant. Girls were weird about that, he knew.

The only problem he foresaw with this new plan, was the fact that they would be alone together. At a restaurant, there were other patrons, the wait staff, etc. In the suite, it was just them, one room away from a very large bed. Hell, there was a couch 15 feet away from the dining area, and don't forget the dining table itself. He remembered what happened to the last table they'd had sex on, but he was betting this one was a lot more durable... he knew he shouldn't be thinking about that, but part of him really wanted to find out ( ... )

The held hands the entire carriage ride. Angel showed her things, and at some point they sat in silence for a while. Like a perfect date of perfectness. She was so happy and couldn’t help but kiss him on the lips after the ride was over. It was just the perfect moment. There were people around, so they would never rip off each others clothes or anything like that. It was more of a ‘thank you’ affectionate kiss than anything else ( ... )

She kissed him, right there at the entrance to Central Park. Angel could only imagine the picture they made, the petite blonde pulling on the lapels of the taller man's coat, nothing distinguishing them from the mass of other New Yorkers out for the night. They were just two ordinary people, just a regular couple, finishing up a date with a kiss.

So many people wished they were different, were special, and worked so hard to make themselves stand out from the crowd. At that moment, Angel wanted nothing more than to have a perfectly normal, ordinary, regular and boring relationship with Buffy. And that's what they were working toward. What they were having.

She thanked him, and Angel couldn't help a small, breathy chuckle. "Believe me Buffy, when I say it's my pleasure. Thank you for..." For what? Giving him a second chance, giving him chance number whatever-he-was-on. For everything, for making his life--his existence, worth it, for-- "For being you," he continued softly. "For loving me, and... yeah, I think 'everything' covers it." ( ... )

The fact that Angel made the comment of everything being real was something that Buffy still needed a little bit of convincing. It was too nice for her to be having this much fun. They were walking, and she was honestly warm with her bags, and her new clothes, and her new boyfriend, and, obviously in his coat. That just made things that much better ( ... )

Angel grimaced a little at her question, but answered honestly. "Yeah, we better find something... though I honestly have no idea where to look." He gave a humorless laugh. "This wasn't exactly the neighborhood I lived in, last time ( ... )

If Angel had any idea what she had in mind for what was next. The entire date, yeah, she’ll admit, she was thinking of excuses. What was it, sex after the third date, right? That was acceptable? She was thinking of ways it was acceptable, and her mind was taking her on a roller coaster ride. It was ridiculous ( ... )

Angel found his mind straying slightly, though not in the same direction as Buffy's. Now that he actually had the blood, he couldn't ignore how hungry he'd gotten. He couldn't let that happen again. The more hungry he was, the more susceptible he was to... other temptations. And with Buffy right there... It wasn't too bad yet, but he'd have to eat as soon as they got back to the room.

Buffy wrapped her arms around him, and Angel startled slightly, inhaling a little sharply. That didn't help, because so close together, he could smell every nuance of her scent. Definitely eating, as soon as possible.

"What movie?" Her question distracted him slightly from his wandering thoughts. He chuckled a little. "Do you know how long it's been since I've watched-- anything? I'm sure the room's got Pay-Per-View, we'll find something."

That was when Angel realized something, rather minor, but surprising, given how long they'd known each other. "I don't know what kind of movie you like."

Buffy felt Angel tense up just a little bit, but she didn’t pay it much mind. She just kept her hands around him, feeling warm, where really; she wasn’t supposed to feel it at all. Probably more cold than anything ( ... )
