I love Your thoughts about this comic (which i cannot access, since my log in data seems to be lost, and DH isn't able to produce an answer - i cannot create a new log in, since my email data is already in the system... so, my code is rotting on my hard drive).
I especially love how this mini comic seems to encompass Spike's journey since the end of S7 - which only re-enforces my long standing belief, that AtS (and of course IDW - let's speak of it no more *spits*) isn't the whole story, but more of a tell-tale, a could-have-happened-that-way story when considering Buffy's story ("things got fuzzy in LA").
So Whedon/Espenson (and btw.: is that her author's name on the back of the bug romance novel?) take their time to bring the reader up to speed, so to speak, where Spike is coming from and where he stands now. let'S hope that this high and poetic quality of writing continues (i fear meltzerization...).
Yeah, I had the same problem with DH not processing my answer. So I created a new account actually because they wouldn't reply to give me my password. But you should go to newly_legion and you'll find what you're looking for. :D
I'm hopeful, too! I want to keep it up with the Whedon/Espenson style here. I feel like Spike with all those burn wounds after the severe Meltzerization. DNW a repeat of that experience.
That issue was just wonderful. I watched Doublemeat Palace last night so I am on a Jane Espenson witty dialogue high. I lovelovelove the panel of drunk Spike waxing lyrical about Dru whilst he has obviously been carving lovehearts with Buffy in mind. And I awwwwed like a madwoman at that shot of Spike singing lullabies to the grubs. I have an urge to read Spuffy babyfic now. He is so adorable!
Also, I wonder if there is any significance to the bug names? Elizabeth struck me as a name that is used all the time in fanon to refer to Buffy in historical/AU fic.
Hee! Drunk!Spike hearing voices and drawing B+S hearts into his overturned table-cum-pillow.
And yeah, Elizabeth struck me as a vague-ish shoutout to Buffy, but not really? Since that's not her name, though a lot of fandom seems to think it's her given name. But she's always been "just Buffy."
On a shallow note I am loving the Captain-John-Hart-like attire Spike is sporting these days. And I love Buffy's hat as a throwback to Becoming and First Date. But egads, her coat is hideous!
Also, I only just noticed Spike hugging the bug legs in that drunk panel. And the discarded copy of OK! magazine draped over the table. Gotta love his ability to keep up with the British tabloid magazines even whilst drifting through space.
Yes! It was fantastic and a wonderful kickoff for Season Nine!
Excellent points about Spike's desire for connection and how wonderfully *in-character* this Spike is. I've only read bits and pieces of the IDW comics, so I can't compare, but this is a magnificent character study in ten pages. I've been discussing elsewhere how Spike is defined by his relationships with others, and apparently that goes for even the bugs he once couldn't keep track of at all.
And I gotta say, it's refreshing to read something with so many hints of Spuffy and know that it was written by someone who has them in mind as a fan. :)
Sooo in-character! Yeah, I gave up on the IDW comics, only really trying every now and then with issues/previews featuring Spike and the characterization/voice was too galling. The sense of humor and the lack of sensitivity were just totes off. So glad he's back under the Whedon-and-conseqently-Espenson umbrella.
YES. It's so refreshing to read this and know the Spuffy dripping off the pages is there for a reason. I don't see much room for debate on it, personally. It's alive, alive! :P

Is Jane E. writing more for DH? Because I don't see much difference between Willingham, Williams, and Whedon at this point.

But I can say I see a MASSIVE difference between Willingham/Williams and Whedon. YMMV, naturally. :D
