I read AfterElton pretty much every day. Yes, I know, AfterElton is aimed at gay and bisexual men and perhaps it would therefore make more sense for me to read AfterEllen, the equivalent site for women, and I do drop in there occasionally. My pop cultural preferences aside...

This morning there was an interview posted with JJ Abrams revisiting ( Read more... )

Wow, that interview kind of pissed me off. Aside from the never-letting-the-interviewer-finish-a-sentence thing that you mentioned, it just seemed like Abrams was waaaay trying too hard to make himself feel better. "It's such a terribly hard thing to do in a movie, blahblah, I totally want to but I don't know if I can" instead of the truth "you're right, it would be easy to add in a gay character; I'm sorry we haven't done it yet. We don't want to offend all the homophobic people who buy movie tickets".

They did it fairly easily in the Doctor Who episode "A Good Man Goes to War" where it's revealed 2 soldiers are married to each other but it's not a big deal, just lines in passing as the story develops.

At the rate Abrams is going Kirk and Spock will be around the ages of the originals when they first appeared on ST - so much for young StarFleet.

Next year Zachary Quinto will be as old as Nimoy was when he started playing Spock. If it keeps up they'll have to "reboot" ST every 3 movies.

I don't often get to see you, so I don't often get to tell you how excellent you are. :D

I'm still upset about what Abrams did with 'Trek... (perhaps I'm old-fashioned, but I like the old TOS and first six movies - okay, minus no. I and V - best).

And I agree, nothing is more stupid than this whole OBVIOUS "putting a gay character into the plot to show how progressive we are" thing - I'd like your solution so much more.

Off topic, but I read "Songs sung red" in the "The Wild Side" anthology, and I liked it very much, it was an interesting new perspective on the dynamics of Vicki's and Mike's relationship.

Meanwhile, there was the Babylon 5 episode where Franklin &, IIRC, Garibaldi went undercover pretending to be on their honeymoon. In order to be inconspicuous, y'know.

McCoy being bi in the reboot would thrill me, but the most logical person to be bi would be Spock. Spock Prime's great love is Jim; Spock Secundus' great love is Uhura.
