Wherein I prepare for a loo-ooo-ooong day

My goodness. I've been awake for an hour now! Have a coffeecake in the oven (and it's starting to smell yummy, all cinnamon and chocolate). Have a kid on the couch. Have problems with my domain resolving.

Yes, it's one of those mornings. Though now youngest says she feels "great" and she's actually believing me that she doesn't have a fever or the ( Read more... )

Yay! You ordered books on the Russian Front! They're hard to find, because the Soviets kept everything under wraps for so long, thereby screwing themselves out of the credit they deserved for helping win the war. All I had until 1990 were my German grandfather's "war stories"- highly sanitized for our consumption- and a pile of photos he took while he was there. You ARE a great professor! *pets*

I'm really enjoying David Glantz's scholarship on the Russian Front. We ordered his big co-authored book on Kursk (I already have my own copy) and also his book on Zhukov and Operation Mars. You're right that it's so exciting to see new material taking advantage of the opening archives. Our students don't know how lucky they are!

Remind them. Seriously. All students need occasional reminders and tangible evidence that they are lucky. I try to remind myself that I am lucky but sometimes I forget and feel sorry for myself instead. "Wah, terrible workload! Wah, I'm tired! Wah, I have no income!" Bah. Reminders that we are lucky are good and sometimes needed.

Oh, I want that Kursk book so badly!! I've already put it on my b-day wishlist, because I have a suspicion that my father already has it and just wants to read it before giving it to me!

"Today we might go to the last day of the spring dog show that runs through lunchtime: the girls love any excuse to admire lots of cute canines (as do their parents)!"

I love dog shows. I watch them on tv, attend when I can, and own a dog myself. He doesn't show though.

Have fun looking at all the pretty doggies.
