I want to tell everyone I know to READ THIS. In fact, I am. READ THIS. I may have to go log into facebook or something to publicize it more, i mean it that much. The parts I want to re-emphasize ( under the cut. )
good! on the one hand, it's depressing to realize you're sometimes saying sexist things or holding sexist attitudes (or at least, it was depressing for me, particularly because it is important to me not to be sexist). But when it really comes down to it, you not only will not, you cannot change without knowing what you're doing, so we need to cultivate both an ability to point out sexism and misogyny to others, and a will to change ourselves when it's pointed out in us.
same for racism, same for homophobia, same for discrimination in general. holding sexist attitudes isn't what makes you a bad person--in our culture, it's impossible not to. Not trying to change those attitudes, actively defending those attitudes, that's what makes you a bad person.
it's not that they hate women or anything, but they don't see why they can't call someone a slut or a tease or a cunt or an uptight bitch if she is, you know, acting like one.
my sister and i got into an argument with most of facebook about why this is not right. I couldn't believe how many people just didn't get it. that article is the best thing i've seen on the internet all week.
it's not that you can't call it like you see it. it's that you need to take a step back and think about why you see it like that. And all of these terms used to describe women come into play the most when a woman is not putting out for you and you think she should. Why the hell should she? particularly if you're calling her nasty names It just makes me angry. Go you and your sister! Even if no one listens this time, just keep arguing it until something gets through.
