oh dear

I've lived here too long. I was just thrown right out of an X-Files fic that had Scully making it by car from Georgetown to Takoma Park in fifteen minutes.

hahahhahahahhahahaha.

Some days, i IMAGINE it takes twice that long to even get out of Georgetown.

I have no idea why Scully and Mulder have an office in Takoma Park, that's nearly as unlikely as ( Read more... )

Maybe she made a siren with her mouth and hung out of the car.

You just summarized why all the Harry Dresden novels make me want to throw them across the room. Those books hurt my brain and make me exposit, loudly, on public streets.

It felt a little like the location was picked randomly on the map. Which it's not like I've never done that. It's just different when you've actually lived in the place they're writing about. Sometimes, exact details aren't your friend, when those details are wrong.

Mind you, with the Dresden novels, he got something wrong that was basically a gigantic "THIS MAN HAS NEVER ACTUALLY TALKED TO SOMEONE FROM CHICAGO. EVER. LET ALONE BEEN THERE." blinking light over it. That really, really threw me out of the book, even though it is one of my favorite of the series.

Sigh. Research! Why so hard!

hahaha. Sheesh. I can give fanfic writers a pass. Published novels not so much.

And all I can think is, "but wouldn't Mulder and Scully be a NoVa couple?"

They so would! Unless we're talking post-firing from the FBI, and then they'd probably have shuffled off to the countryside somewhere, maybe, I dunno. But they'd be NoVa over MD, I imagine.

The Lone Gunmen's office was in Takoma Park.

Still doesn't explain how they could get anywhere in 15 minutes, though. Maybe the rest of the world lost time. :)

And by "office" I mean "lair."

Was it really? Really not where I'd imagine their office being. Well. Maybe. It's an independent, progressive, free-thinking kind of place, so that fits. It's also known as "The People's REpublic of Takoma Park," if that tells you anything.

It's just kind of a cute, cheery, hippy-ish place, too, and a weird fit with paranoia. Though that contrast might work well if you knew what you were doing, in a fic.

oh god, I really want to read that fic now.

Huh. I didn't know that about Takoma Park, but it does sound sort of weirdly appropriate.

Strangely, without even living there, I am very suspicious of this new little mystery I am reading where the heroine hithers and yons around DC without mentioning traffic once. She's at the courthouse! (Which one? You tell me, dude. Apparently there is only one in DC.) She's in the suburbs! She's back at the courthouse! She's out at her townhouse!

And all this between 9am and noon. I have suspicions.
