Fussy French Food

“What is this?” demanded Howell, when I handed him the box.

“Pastries,” I said, mouth full of éclair.

“French pastries,” he corrected.

“Yep.”

My partner frowned. “Jones, you take unhealthy glee in being a cop who eats doughnuts and drinks coffee. The owners of six different doughnut establishments know you by name and favorite flavor. You’re also known for your disapproval of - and I quote - fussy French food.”

“Both true,” I agreed. “But first off, desserts don’t count - those are supposed to be fussy. And second, this is a special occasion.”

“Sunday afternoon?” said Howell.

“Nope. Happy Bastille Day, sir.”
