Vala reached the Control Room at a dead run, still pulling on her duty jacket. Alarms blared from several consoles, their volume decreasing as she came skidding to a stop beside Sam.

"What is it?" she demanded.

"We're not getting an IDC," said the 'gate technician- Emily, the young woman who'd replaced Walter. "But, ma'am, we are getting a radio signal."

"Put it through," Sam ordered.

"General, this is Lieutenant Jones!" came a voice, shouting to be heard over the roar of wind and the intermittent crack of thunder. "Colonel O'Neill sent me to report in, but I lost my GDO on my way to the 'gate."

Losing a GDO was a rookie mistake, but Jones was as new as they came, fresh out of the Air Force Academy.

"Status, lieutenant?" asked Sam, a hint of reprimand in her voice to let him know there'd be more coming.

"Yes, ma'am," he continued, "The rain started up as soon as we arrived, but only got bad about thirty minutes ago. Dr. Jackson wanted to examine a ruin near the 'gate, and needed Colonel O'Neill in case it was Ancient."

"Is it Ancient?" asked Vala.

"I... I don't know, ma'am," said Jones. "Their radios must have been affected by something in the ruin. When they didn't report in after fifteen minutes, Rya'c went after them and sent me to the 'gate, as per the colonel's original instructions."

"Lieutenant," said Sam, "stay where you are. If the weather is the only concern-"

"It's not!" interrupted a new voice. "Jackson here, and we're sending through our IDC now."

Suddenly, over the sound of the wind and rain, Sam and Vala could hear the unmistakable crack of weapons fire.

"This is O'Neill!" came a third voice. "We're taking fire, lots of it, and we're coming in hot!"

"We're receiving their iris code," Emily reported.

"Open the iris!" snapped Sam.

Two energy weapon shots hit the back wall of the 'gate room, seconds before Lieutenant Jones appeared, looking somewhere between terrified and completely freaked out. He was closely followed by Rya'c, wearing his usual blend of Jaffa armor and BDUs and firing behind him as he ran.

"They're right behind me!" he called to the Control Room.

Sure enough, two more figures in rain-soaked BDUs came clattering down the ramp as the wormhole disengaged.

"So," said Lieutenant Colonel A.J. O'Neill, shaking sodden bangs out of her face. "That was fun."

Dr. Zoë Jackson scowled. "I think you're confusing 'fun' with 'disastrous and potentially deadly' again."

"Yeah, I always get those mixed up." A.J. looked up at the Control Room. "You'll want to cross P8J-997 off the dialing list, ma'am. Natives are kinda hostile."

"And by hostile," said Rya'c, "she means they shoot arrows and spears at people who even go near their sacred ruins, let alone go inside them."

Rya'c wasn't quite broad enough to be as imposing as Teal'c, but he had the eyebrow thing down pat.

"Debriefing in ten," said Sam, finally smiling.
