Twenty-One

As Daniel grabbed the railing to haul himself up the stairs, he wondered which was stranger, that Cam had lived in the same apartment for more than twenty years, or that the elevator had only been working once during that entire time.

"Jackson," said Cam, when he opened the door. "I was wondering when you'd get here."

Daniel frowned, and followed him inside. "It's two in the morning, Cam. How did you know I was coming?"

"Please, like I can't see a fight coming between you and Vala from a mile away." He walked into the kitchen, pulling a bottle and two glasses from a cabinet. "So, let's hear it."

"Hear what?" Daniel asked, even as he sank into a chair at the tiny kitchen table.

Cam poured an inch of amber liquid into each glass, then slid one across to him.

Daniel sighed and took a swig. "My son is getting married tomorrow."

"Yep. Got my uniform pressed and ready to go."

"My youngest son, Cam."

The other man leaned back in his chair. "See, I'm thinking this is why Vala kicked you out tonight. All the crazy stuff we do, and this is what freaks you out."

"What?" Daniel asked, genuinely confused.

Cam poured a little more into his glass. "All the stuff we've seen. You've traveled to other planets and other galaxies. You've met aliens, you married an alien, you've died more than once, Ascended, Descended... And the one thing that bothers you is that your second-youngest kid is getting married?"

"Okay, when you put it like that..."

"They're good kids, Daniel."

"No, they're not. They're adults now, all of them." Daniel took a long pull of his- was that whiskey?- and continued, "Zoë's officially on SG-5 with A.J. and Rya'c. Benny's running that dig for the University of Cairo. Davie's a Marine, and god, when did that happen? Even Vivienne's finished college and teaching linguistics seminars at a dozen different places. And now Ernie's getting married."

Cam sighed and refilled both their glasses. "Jackson, you're old. You're just gonna have to get used to it. Kids grow up, we retire and they take up our fights. Doesn't mean we worry any less, but that's the way it has to be."

"It just seems like we were fighting for so long," said Daniel, with a sigh of his own. "We lost so much, made so many mistakes. It doesn't seem right that they should have to continue for us."

"Life's unfair, Jackson. But you have to admit, you've given your five a hell of a head start."

Daniel snorted a laugh. "Yeah, I guess you're right."

"Course I am. Come on, I'll make up the couch for you." Cam found some sheets in the closet and tossed them to Daniel, then ducked into the kitchen and handed him a glass of water. "If you're hungover tomorrow, Vala's gonna kill us both."

"Yeah." Daniel took the glass. "Thanks, Cam. For everything."

Cam grinned. "Hey, that's what family's for."
