They had walked through the entire base, every level, every room, even twice through the infirmary, and nothing had happened.

"Not even a twinge?" Daniel asked.

Vala folded her arms over her very, very rounded middle and glared at him. "Trust me, Daniel, if I feel the slightest hint of a contraction, you will be the first person to hear about it."

He tightened his arm around her waist. "I'm sorry. If there was anything I could do to help..."

She managed a smile. "I know, darling. Let's just keep walking, all right?"

"Carolyn said it would help," said Daniel, starting to sound a little worried. "I mean, it's three weeks past your due date..."

"She also said a due date was only an estimation," Vala replied. "Even with the Ancient medical equipment Atlantis sent us, no one will ever be able to predict when a human child will be born. Especially if his or her name is Jackson."

"I see. This is my fault."

"Of course, darling. Haven't you figured that out by now?"

Daniel smiled. "I'm starting to."

"I'm starting to wonder why this baby is so determined to stay in there," said Vala, resting both hands on her middle. "I'm rather anxious to meet him."

"Me, too," he said, then frowned. "Him?"

Vala nodded. "I know we asked Carolyn not to tell us the gender, but I'm almost certain." She huffed softly. "Although, at this rate, we might never know."

Daniel laughed and moved to stand in front of her, covering her hands with his own. "Hey there, little guy," he said, to the baby. "Don't you think it's about time to be born? Your mom's been carrying you around for a long time, but I can't really do anything about that until you join us out here. So, what do you say?"

He paused, expectantly, then looked up at his wife. "Well?"

"Daniel, only you would try to talk a baby into being born," said Vala, with a smile. "I hate to burst your bubble, darling, but it doesn't work that way."

"It was at least worth a try," he said, as they started walking again. "His- or her- name is Jackson, after all."

"His," Vala repeated. "It's going to be a boy, darling. A mother knows these things."

Daniel wasn't about to debate her on that one. "Okay, we'll keep going for one more level, before we call Carolyn."

She shook her head. "Really, there's no need to- call Carolyn!"

"Just a precaution, Vala. And I can-"

"No," she interrupted, calmly. "You need to call Carolyn. My water just broke."

"It-" Daniel blinked at her. "What?"

Vala grabbed his sleeve and tugged him down the hallway. "Honestly, darling, are you going to be like this every time we have a baby?"

He hurried to keep up, then paused. "Every time? You want to try this again?"

Her eyes widened as a contraction hit. "Ask me again later."

"Fruitcake," he muttered and kissed her.
