Previous Two
For the first time since she was a very young girl, Vala found herself planning for the future. Actual, real plans, involving permanent residence on a single planet and having other people to share her life with.
Or, more accurately, one specific person to share her life with.
She and Daniel had been seeing each other for a few months and it hadn't taken them long to- well, Sam called it 'consolidating their living spaces', and Mitchell said 'shacking up'- but mostly it consisted of Vala moving the rest of her wardrobe into Daniel's on-base quarters when she realized she slept there so often she had no more clean clothes in his closet.
And that was what had her contemplating her future- their future.
Daniel called it the American Dream, and it surprised Vala to find that she wanted it, too. She wanted the neat little house and white-picket fence. She wanted to really and truly belong to the planet she'd chosen as her home.
To make that happen, though, she was going to need some help, which was what had her leaning against the corridor wall for the past ten minutes, waiting for a certain visiting general to get out of his meeting.
"Jack," she said, when he finally appeared.
"Vala," he replied, in exactly the same tone he used to say 'Daniel', which made her stomach do a funny little flop.
"Jack," she repeated, "I need a favor."
He paused, eyes narrowed. "Is it illegal?"
"No," she said, slightly affronted.
"Just checking," said Jack with a smile, ushering her back into the now-empty conference room. "What kind of favor?"
She smiled back. "I need your help becoming an official citizen of this planet.
"We do citizenship on a country-by-country basis, you know. And I'm gonna have to know why."
Vala took a deep breath. "I want to get married."
"Do I know him?"
"Jack!" she protested loudly.
He grinned and leaned back against the edge of the table. "I didn't know you and Danny were up to that stage."
"Actually, we haven't talked about it yet," Vala admitted. "I mean, I love him, and I know he loves me, and we live together, and...." She sighed. "Daniel hasn't said anything, but I know how important marriage is to people here on Earth. Along with a fairly obsessive need to document everything."
"I'm familiar with the concept of paperwork," said Jack, dryly. "But do you really know how much it's going to take to get this done? I'm not saying you shouldn't do it, and I'm not saying I won't help, but you could get married without becoming a US citizen."
"I know," she replied. "I just... I want this to be permanent."
Jack smiled. "Yeah, I kinda thought so. I'll get your share of the paperwork to you before I head back to D.C."
Two months later, Vala held a set of official documents bearing her name, declaring her an official citizen of the United States of America.
