This is very very very interesting. And you say you don't do meta but write fic instead, and here you did both as a sort of meta about how fiction is written.
Having people write about you is a very, I don't want to say "weird" because that sounds negative, like WEIRD TALES, but it's odd. The subject will have a reaction (well, that's like me, I do that, or I don't do that), but there is also the reaction from others to think about. Whether you portray someone accurately or not, some readers might not relate to the "character" on the page, and it can be hard not to take that personally, except fictional characters are their own thing, even if BASED on someone.
I wonder what politicians and celebrities feel when they read unauthorised biographies now. :)
I could never do the meta without the fic, and I'm not sure I answered any questions more than I feel that I pinpointed more accurately what the specific questions are.
I wonder what politicians and celebrities feel when they read unauthorised biographies now. :)I can imagine that it's not savoury. What strikes be about that, as opposed to what I see in most RPF of a fannish nature (and the money thing right there taints the comparison), is something akin to what Nick notes in his initial reaction-- that we try to show them in a favorable light. I mean, an unauthorised biography is unauthorised for many reasons, and that might be a sign about what's in it. I always think of them as trash that's meant to titillate and make money. And nothing titillates more than...hrm. Sex and...wait, that's like fannish RPF. LOL. It's different, and I want to be able to put my finger on why. Maybe the subject of the fic is viewed by the writer in different ways? I love JB, but Andrew Morton wants to make a few hundred thou off Lady Di.

Oh I know, and I think most RPS is probably positive, and not "I HATE THESE PEOPLE AND I'LL WRITE MEAN STUFF", but but but, it's intimate details. I think a case can be made that RPF involving sex can be quite, you know, bothersome, because though it's obviously labeled fiction, unlike tabloid accounts which can be terrible, an author might be writing about someone fucking some other actor they really can't stand and wouldn't fuck with YOUR dick. I mean, personally, that might make me throw shit in a way that "I ship it" doesn't. And in actor/celeb cases, I think the RPF is often really about "I want to fuck David Tennant" and not "I want to imagine someone else fucking David Tennant". Which is somehow different to me if it's a self-insert Rose as Mary Sue in a fanfic versus a self-insert his-real-girlfriend. I DON'T KNOW WHY I THINK IT'S DIFFERENT! :D

I DON'T KNOW WHY I THINK IT'S DIFFERENT! :DI think this is why, as much as I enjoyed reading Mander's RPF stories, it's a very different kind of enjoyment than I get from reading one of her regular fics. like, it's one thing to envision Jack and Ianto making up to a third party for games. Like manipulating pretend dolls for pretend games, on some level. it's another thing, entirely, to say that your doll is John Barrowman, and that he and the Scott Gill Doll are making up to the Gareth doll, for pretend naughty games. It is on a different level, and while it's still pleasurable, it's a very much more.. illicit, maybe? kind of pleasure. (I'm not sure what the word is, but it's bound up with voyeurism and guilt and 'naughty' and a few other things. No less

\O/ MY PLAN IS REVEALED. THIS WAS A HUGE CAUTIONARY TALE. HAAHAHAHA
DO YOU FEEL LIKE EBENEZER SCROOGE? DO YOU FEEL AS IF YOU HAVE LEARNT SOMETHING?
I wanted to add that you didn't have romantic thoughts, but I figured that was for you to divulge. You know who else doesn't have romantic thoughts? CYBERMANS.
so I admit that I have read your RPF fics (though not cruentum's), and I've enjoyed them, in much the same way I think people read the national enquirer - with guilty gossipy pleasure, but with no expectation that the stories are in any way 'real' or truthful, as opposed to fictive.
your meta-post leads me to ask you (and cruentum) the larger question: Why write RPF? what do you see about it that is more, or differently, attractive than writing about fic characters? Did you find writing the Nick/Carolyn fic differently problematic than writing a John/Scott/Gaz fic, or are they similarly problematic, just on a continuum of scale? (I suppose I'm thinking of the closeness, or lack of same, issue here

Second layer, and this is something both Mandr and I do in our fics specifically, I think, is to create a false reality, if you will. To make the world we write in as real and honest and truthful as possible with the information that is accessible and to build it into something that looks real, but isn't. It's almost a game, at that, to have references and internal references to one another's fics.
I like to call it playing "WHERE'S CRUENTUM?"
Also, see mah thang below. We like, attached it at different ends, like that horrible pic of John and CJ eating the spaghetti. You can be John. I'll be the dog.
Well, I don't do it about everyone. I think for me, it's a natural progression. Like, I don't write RPF for most things that I'm a fan of, but TW has afforded me the chance to talk about the actors more than I usually do (for instance, I never spent any time talking about Peter Wingfield when I was in HL). so it was natural to move from that duscussion to RPF/RPS. This i largely because I believe that I do my best at, hrm, well, I suck at meta, I think it's boring for the most part, and so I'd rather talk about meta by writing fic. This means that I have things to say about celebrity, and because my thoughts on them have been spurned by TW actors, they are where I go. In almost every single RPS I've written, it involves that. I'm not interested in...Scott and John domestic bliss etc

I haven't any more thinky thoughts today, because my brain is occupied with beta and bills. I'm just glad y'all have posted this for the rest of us to chew on. It's great.
Also, I fucking love your mug in that photo, and want to steal it right off my screen.

I think you might have some good observations in there. I think intent of the author is a bog thing, and age probably plays into that, too.
I TOO HAVE REAL BUTTER. BUT NO CORNMEAL. STILL, I COULD DO SOMETHING WITH THIS BUTTER.
