Via Ferrata - Part 1

Starting the climb

I was invited to Get high on the world's tallest indoor Via Ferrata over the weekend and we had great fun! Well, okay. B.T had fun, because I thought that we will be using special climbing shoes so I only came with my workout gear and socks. So I will get my turn later this week! Meanwhile, part 1 is on B.T's experience.

Via Ferrata (Italian for "Iron Way") is a fixed protection climbing path that has been made popular in European mountains, without the risks associated with unprotected scrambling and climbing. It is different from rock/sport climbing as it allows unskilled climbers to scale similar heights achieved by skilled climbers. The difference lies in the fixed protection climbing path made out of a system of cables along the wall (both vertically and horizontally).

The FIRST Via Ferrata in Singapore at the newly opened Orchard Central mall, is brought in by the BorderX team - a group of passionate outdoor people. What is cool about it is that it is right smack in the shopping mall amidst shops and cafes. It is air conditioned so you don't need to worry about the heat and it is a great activity to check out especially for guys who don't want to follow their girls around shopping :P

For those that prefer the traditional rock climbing, there is a small part to try out. However, I will strongly advise you to try out the new Via Ferrata because it is something different and a great way to start out on climbing if you are hesistant about safety and falling. Via Ferrata is extremely safe. A briefing is provided to explain how it works and you are guided along the climb.

B.T was excited to start and when asked if he wanted to take a break at the ledge midway, he said, Nah. I'll go all the way to the top!. As I watched him climb, I wished I was climbing as well! But nevermind, I'll get my chance later this week :)

A skilled staff climber will proceed to climb up first and the person was linked to B.T via the ropes. As he climbed up, another staff climber followed behind. So he was in the safest position right in the middle with support above and below. So that comforting to scaredy cats like me. Although I have done a few climbs in Krabi and have abseiled down, I am afraid of heights. I liked the fact that in Via Ferrata, safety is a top priority and also, the metal rungs along the climb route enables you to get an easier foothold and grip as you climb.

B.T did really well and he ascended and descended in 30 minutes - usually takes 40 minutes. He wasn't expecting to sweat but he came down with his tee shirt soaked in perspiration from the climb :P In his words, he said that he really enjoyed it, it was a good way to get a good rush without the danger element tied to it. He prefers it to rock climbing and wanted to have another go at it.

So for those seeking for a new hobby or adventure, do check out Via Ferrata. Just remember to wear shoes, capris (to prevent chaffing and scrapped skin) - gym sort of bottoms and a breathable top. Gloves, harness and helmet are provided. Oh yes, bring mozzie spray too as the current construction nearby results in some mozzies flying around. So if you don't want to be bothered by bites, just spray on some repellant or so.
