Title: Nothing Like You And I
Author: darkbluerain
Rating: PG-17
Pairing: Jack/Alex
POV: Third
Summary: Just by looking at Jack Barakat, you can tell he really doesn't give a fuck what people think about him. Alexander Gaskarth didn't wake up one morning and go, "I think I'll start dressing in drag more often."
Disclaimer: None of it happened. Borrowed some ideas from Transamerica. Title belongs to my favorite song by The Perishers.
Author Notes: Just so you all know, updates for this are going to be pretty random. It'll be regularly updated though, fo sho. Sorry this chapter is a little short.
Previous Chapters: Prologue/ Chapter One

Alex cannot help but feel slightly sorry for their new passenger, seeing as John has taken the opportunity to chatter nonstop about the fight that landed him in jail the previous night.
"So then this big ogre of a dude takes a swing at me, but I'm little, y'know? So I just ducked under it and punched him in the gut. Seeing as he probably was actually part ogre, he didn't seem to be affected, so then he goes and-"
Alex cuts him off. "John, I'm sure that last night was exciting, but I don't think Jack wants every, let alone any, detail. Leave the poor kid alone."
The smallest hint of a smile appears on Jack's face. To Alex, Jack seems like one of the kids that was always the mastermind of elaborate pranks in high school, but when it the time came to confess, he kept as quiet as everyone else in on it until someone finally cracked and took the blame. Those intense eyes of his seemed to be hiding something, whether it be a past, a complex personality, or something more. Whatever it is, Alex is polite enough to not ask.
After about twenty minutes of driving the car pulls into a small restaurant parking lot. Alex and John usually stop here after Alex bails him out, but Jack has never been there, and looks around curiously as they enter. The inside has got a very rustic look to it, almost something akin to a Cracker Barrel. Alex and John take their normal seat, a booth near a large oil painting of a rural landscape; Jack sits alone on one side, plucking at the skin on the back of his hand.
"So, Jack, what landed you in jail in the first place? You look like you got banged up in the process."
Jack looks up at them from behind the bangs that have fallen into his eyes. "This guy...he owed me some money, and he didn't want to give it to me. So we got into a fight out on the street, and then I ended up getting arrested. The guy ran for it."
Alex looks into those dark eyes again. He thinks there's probably more to the story, something that Jack is reluctant to tell them. Before either Alex or John can question their new companion further, a bubbly blonde with green eyes comes up to their table, order pad in hand and a pen stuck behind her ear.
"Hey Alex, hey John! Who's your new friend, I haven't seen him before."
Any trace of comfort in front of Jack is completely drained from Alex's mind. His cover, his beloved cover, blown with a simple hello. John bites his lip and runs a hand down his face.
"Aww, fuck, Carey..."
Jack has quirked an inquisitive eyebrow.
"Alex? Thought you said your name was Aislinn?"
Carey's smile falls away as quickly as Alex's sense of comfort. She, too, bites her lip, threading her tongue nervously through the ring in her lip.
"Oh, I messed up, didn't I?"
She backs away slowly, muttering, "I'll be back in a little while," as she heads towards another table. John drums his fingers on the tabletop nervously for a few seconds before dreaming up his own escape.
"Oh, look at that, someone I know. I'll just, uh, just leave you two here for a second, be right back..."
He, too, vacates the table, leaving Alex and Jack alone. Alex is nervously playing with his purse strap, twisting it around in his fingers until Jack finally speaks up.
"You're a guy?"
"...Yeah."
"Do you do this all the time, or just today?"
Alex blushes. "All the time."
There's a pause as Jack seems to think things over. Alex can practically taste the tension in the air.
After about half a minute of silence, Jack reaches nonchalantly for a menu and says, "Okay, cool."
Alex looks up at Jack, watching him scan the items on the fancily bordered menu. The comfort that had left him not even five minutes ago comes rushing back.
"Yeah. Cool."
