"I know, I know, 'Stay out of the lab'," Kitty chirped, happily petting the Pomeranian in her arms and smiling at the dour man before her. Kitty, seemingly unfazed by Lex's irritation, crossed over to the lab table and leaned against it, eying the computer with mild curiosity.

"Did you fix it yet?"

"If I had fixed it, would I still be down here?" Lex snapped, eyeing the Pomeranian. "And I told you not to bring that thing down here!"

"'That thing' has a name."

"I don't care," Lex said. "The only reason I didn't make you send that thing to go live with one of your friends is because Caesar likes it for some reason." He rolled his eyes. "Caesar likes everything that annoys me. Damn cat."

He was about to continue berating Kitty, something about dog hair around sensitive equipment, when there was a low, rumbling humming noise that seemed to go through the entire building. The lights and computers all powered down, and the backup generators didn't come on. The lab was totally dark.

"Kitty, what the hell did you do?"

"Sorry, sweetie, I forgot to tell you I decided to cut the power just for laughs," Kitty quipped, clutching her dog closer as it panicked slightly in the dark.

"So what's going on, huh? I don't suppose you have any flashlights or candles just lying around?" Kitty pushed off from the low table and took a faltering step closer to Lex, reaching out a hand tentatively to find him in the dark.

"Lex?"

Lex could feel Kitty near him in the dark, and reached out a hand to her, making contact with her wrist. He pulled her closer to him and gave the dog a distracted pat on the head to make it stop whimpering ( ... )
