The little AU: Winter Hopes: Scale

Winter, in the Northern Hemisphere, is about hidden things. Even in the tropics where there seems to be no change, no snow, no real shortness or lengthening, slow lengthening, of days, there is still work going on invisible to our eyes, man's eyes. On our scale it's about vacations being over, about school starting back up, about snow tires and lost mittens and Valentine's going up in the stores as soon as the 75% OFF Everything must GO Christmas decoration sales are over.
But in Nature's world it's about migratory patterns over thousands of miles of ocean, through thousands of miles of sky. It's about seeds being soaked by rain, or cracked open under the snow, or burst open in the heat of forest fires, and finding the amount of daylight to their liking to start sending out the smallest root, the tiniest false leaves.
So, too, in the men's lives.
Orlando goes back to the world, seeing what's out there, traveling, doing good, being seen, trying to avoid being violated over and over by paparazzi and vampires masquerading as fans.
Hunter gets ready to go back to school on Wednesday, his new things carefully put away, his new bear on his bed, the hundred pictures of the holiday carefully in the portfolio Uncle Orli got him.
Karl gets ready to go back to work, back to Space, the final frontier, though he thinks that really what they're building here, this private quiet world, is really the final frontier, and he's glad it's private to them.
And Viggo goes back to eating very little, to becoming sinew and bone, to sorting out all he's learned, posting poems from memory and joining Hunter in sketching sessions, and talking to a few close friends about this process, and how it's different from every other movie.
The time of being together is almost over. They've left the cabin, arrived at the grey house, will spend the night there tonight. Tomorrow brings the New Year in earnest, with all its wishes, with all its hopes.
