Title: Hard Habit to Break (1/1)
Series: Music Is What Feelings Sound Like
Pairing: Puck/Kurt (beginning of, anyway)
Rating: PG
Fandom: Glee
Summary: Puck kind of disappears a lot and Kurt doesn't like it.
Disclaimer: Very much not mine, sadly.
Notes: Sorry about the delay, guys! Life kicked my ass the last few days. Also, Sweet Caroline came out and I spent an entire night watching it over and over again, ripping the video to put on my iPhone and pulling out an mp3 so I could listen (and watch) whenever I wanted. In other words, if anyone wants either, let me know. I’ll upload. Then last night I sat down with two specific songs and everything in mind, and all the sudden Puck disappeared on Kurt and the story took a whole different journey than I expected. I did; however, figure out the title to the series, so yay for that. And I’m going to do something a little different this time; the music is at the bottom of the post. You’ll see why when you get there. Enjoy!

Kurt wasn't really sure what to make of him and Puck's relationship. He wasn't even what they were, though Mercedes said the closest thing she could think of were "frienemies." Kurt didn't like that so much; he wanted to be Puck's friend. But, Kurt supposed, frienemies was better than Puck chunking him in the dumpster every morning.

Really, he wanted to be Puck's more, but Kurt knew he wasn't a little kid anymore and fairy godmother wishes like that just did not come true for gay boys like him.

They didn't always talk, yet sometimes they couldn't stop. Puck would give him tips in football and Kurt would help Puck learn to hit certain notes that his voice wavered on. But they didn't just talk shop; the two of them talked about movies and the people they went to school with and Mr. Shue's unlimited amount of optimism. ("If I didn't know better, I'd think there was some kind of happy drug out there and he mainlined it," Puck said one afternoon in the choir room, sprawled in the plastic chair. He made it look so comfortable. Kurt tried to sprawl in the chair once, when no one else was in the choir room. He almost fell. He wasn't going to do that again.)

They hadn't talked in a couple of days. Kurt kept half expecting Puck to slide into step beside him one day and for the two of them to pick up their last conversation where they left off. But he never did. Kurt finally cornered Finn in the Choir room before glee.

Finn looked a little nervous, but then he generally did anymore. Kurt really did feel bad for the lead singer; he was a kid having a kid. Everything made him nervous lately. Kurt jutted his hip out, hand resting on his hip. "Where is Puck." It wasn't a question, it was more of a demand.

"Uh." Finn could pull off the deer in the headlights look better than anyone, including Miss Pillsbury. "He's around?"

"I'm asking the questions, Finn, not you. Where is he? I haven't seen him." Kurt was amused at how Finn, who was probably one of the tallest guys in school, practically cowered under Kurt's gaze.

He slid out from between Kurt and the wall. "Hey, I gotta go, uh. Over there," he said, pointing toward Rachel and Quinn, whose heads were bent together as they talked. "I think I see one of the girls calling to me." He raised his voice. "I'm coming, Quinn!"

Kurt turned his head, noticing how Quinn looked up, confused. "Uh, okay," she said, nodding, before turning back to Rachel. The two of them laughed softly, and Kurt rolled his eyes. He had no idea how Finn could be so dense sometimes.

Puck came jogging into the choir room. "Hey, am I late?" He looked around for Mr. Shue even as Mercedes and Artie both said he wasn't. "Good," he said, going to sit down. He ran his palm over his stripe of hair, and Kurt just watched him. Puck hadn't looked at him, or even noticed that he was in the room. Kurt's heart fell and he went to the other side of the room, sitting next to Mercedes. He kind of hid behind the girl, trying to be as small as possible so Puck would never notice him.

There was only one reason Puck was acting the way he was. Kurt was sure of it - Puck didn't want to have anything to do with him anymore. He had been avoiding Kurt, and then the little act that Finn pulled off? Puck was avoiding him. That was fine with Kurt. He had spent years trying to avoid the bullies. He could avoid Puck.

~*~

It was Friday. It was Friday and everything was going wrong. The whole day had been shitty. Kurt woke up ten minutes late, which threw his whole morning routine off. He couldn't moisturize, which left his skin feeling dry and uncomfortable. The drive-thru at Starbucks was far too busy for him to think he could get some coffee, so he missed his morning caffeine intake. He almost got hit by a stupid freshman coming in to the parking lot of school. He was so busy mumbling under his breath about how freshman shouldn't have driver's licenses when he walked into the school that he didn't see right before slamming into Miss Pillsbury. He knocked all of her books out of her hands, causing a huge scene in the middle of the hallway.

The last thing Kurt wanted today, surprisingly, was to be noticed.

It took him three tries to open his locker because of how flustered he was. "Should have just stayed home," Kurt murmured to himself. "Nothing here that's important enough for me to be here today." He slammed his locker open, and then stopped. He frowned slightly. Behind all of the scarves, here was an old flat cassette tape player and a cassette tape sitting on top of his books. Someone had been in his locker and left him a ... cassette tape?

Kurt wondered if they even sold cassette tapes anymore.

There was a sheet of paper under the tape player, and Kurt pulled it out. The handwriting was messy, but easy to read.

Turn around.

Kurt was having such a shitty day. He tensed as he turned, expecting something horrible. Instead, it was Puck. "Hey," Puck said, grinning. "It's Friday."

"I- What?" Kurt blinked at Puck, still trying to figure things out. It had been about a week since Puck had talked to him, and he had no idea what was going on.

"Finn said you were asking about where I was. I had to avoid you because I can't keep secrets and I didn't want to tell you what I was doing for you." He nodded his chin toward the locker. "I made you a mix tape."

Kurt blinked again. "What's a mix tape?"

Puck laughed, shaking his head. "CD mixes, you know what those are?"

"Oh, oh yeah of course," Kurt said. He turned back to his locker, picking up the tape. He was glad Puck provided a tape player too; he had no idea if he had anything to play a cassette tape with. "Wow, this is." Again, he thought Puck was born in the wrong decade. "What's on it?"

"Just some songs I like, Boston, Pink Floyd, Chicago, Lynyrd Skynyrd, some others. I put the original Don't Stop Believin' on there because I was in the auditorium when you were singing it and I really liked it a lot. It's a good song and you guys sounded great."

Kurt ducked his head and smiled faintly. There was a blush there, and he hoped maybe it wouldn't last too long. He was; however, glad to say that his day was so much better than it had been fifteen minutes ago.

"Hey," Puck said, "I've got a tape player in my truck. Let's just ditch the whole day today and listen to the tape and I'll take you to lunch. We'll be back in time for glee practice this afternoon."

Kurt had never skipped a day of school in his life. However, he decided it was time that he started living. If Puck wanted to skip and wanted Kurt to go, he was going to go. He put his books in his locker and shut it, making sure to have the tape in his hand. "Let's do it."

Puck threw his arm around Kurt's shoulders as they walked down the hall toward the school entrance. "So, Hummel," Puck said curiously as they walked outside. "Why does one man need so many scarves?"
