Terrible things!

First of all, thanks to everyone who comment on my last post/link -- depression IS horrifying, and I'm glad I can post about it here, and receive no judgment, just encouragement and understanding. You all rock.

Other terrible things -- has anyone else seen Ruby Sparks and been as horrified by it as I was? It seems everyone thinks it's this awesome

I don't even bother watching movies anymore. People who go to concerts and talk the whole time about how she took ballet for ten years suck as does drinking alone. Not that I am doing that again.

I like to think I watch films and not movies but I have made a few wrong choices lately. Although "Maisie" was actually quite good.

What's this about ballet and drinking alone?

Many is the movie that is MORE than adequately represented on Tumblr, which saves one the $15 as well as the irretrievable hours.

Also I don't spend $15 unless it's a fangirl outing to a movie.

I don't even *have* a Tumblr, I'm just saying that for many Method Models luvvies, you can absorb the only good thing about the movie ("God, so-and-so really is handsome") quicker and cheaper in a still photograph.

Oh can you talk more about Ruby Sparks? I saw the trailer a while back and basically hoarfed fury at it and then someone told me "no it's not like that it's a subversion of that trope" and I didn't entirely believe them and I'd like to know the ways in which it did and did not succeed?

I do wonder if he really has any acting talent after all.

I really don't think I've seen him act, apparently he did some in The Notebook or some film like that but I dislike his face and that movie seemed horrendous.

Ruby Sparks: Okay, where to begin? I'll say up front that I missed the first bit, wherein it *might* have been established that our lead male character Calvin is indeed charming, but I can't imagine any excuse for his inevitable behavior. He's a "genius" writer who had a bestseller at 19 and lives in an amazing house in LA. But he's LONELY and OMG will he ever have another bestseller? So automatically, I'm not endeared.

I would VERY MUCH LIKE to read an argument for how this turns the trope on its head. Because I did not see that. For example, here's the New York Times' Review:

I shudder to imagine how the same concept might have been treated by the writers in the Judd Apatow school of eternal adolescence. There would be smirking, misogynist jokes about sexual organs, bodily fluids and performance anxiety, and the poor woman would be subjected to humiliating trials

I haven't seen any of these movies, but I do have to mention that after seeing two Ryan Gosling movies that we both LOATHED, the husband and I unanimously voted to put the Ryan Gosling Moratorium into effect. Perhaps you'd like to adopt those measures, as well? :D

I think it was Lars and the Real Girl that I liked, plus the hype-hype-hype, and now... I'm done. I read too many Indie Film sites because it's my thing, but they have steered me wrong on the Gos. RGM in effect!

Oh my god, I just reminded myself via IMDB that he was Young Hercules! Ha ha ha. Yes!

Also Half Nelson I recall was very good. But everything since Lars has sucked. SUCKED! Rawr!
