Terrible things!
First of all, thanks to everyone who comment on my last post/link -- depression IS horrifying, and I'm glad I can post about it here, and receive no judgment, just encouragement and understanding. You all rock.
Other terrible things -- has anyone else seen Ruby Sparks and been as horrified by it as I was? It seems everyone thinks it's this awesome quirky little thing (and granted the writer/producer/actor is a woman), but I found it - for lack of a better word - triggery. Tell me if you've seen it!
Not a terrible film, but I did crack my head against What Maisie Knew because it's full of magical realism masquerading as NOT magical realism. I kept waiting for the super-special kid to throw a tantrum or spill coke on her dress, but she was beautiful and loving and precious to the fairy-tale end. Gorgeous film-making, no question, and a unique POV... not to mention Alexander Skarsgard looking fucking FIERCE as hell. I guess I wished I liked kids more and that they were all like Maisie. Or that I could live in a beach house with ASkars and not have to worry about where the money was coming from, or what I would do when the social workers came knocking.
Totally terrible, but not for the reasons I thought: Only God Forgives, the much-ballyhooed Ryan Gosling film from the guy who brought us Drive. That too, was a movie that was painfully slow, had only one redeeming scene, and featured more of Gosling's emotionless face than anyone could shake a stick at. With OGF, I tried three times to get into the film, but could not stick with it. It's supposed to be very violent and shit, but it put me to sleep. Closeups of Ryan Gosling's face are all well and fine, but I'm running out of patience with this as a means to a film. After The Place Beyond the Pines, I do wonder if he really has any acting talent after all. Hey Girl, I'll just be over here, staring at you soulfully, and expecting this relationship will run on fumes.
