Dear LJ, I miss you

Jul 29, 2011 14:20

I've been quite disconcerted by just how much I miss LJ when it's not available so I hope LJ can weather these attacks and find a way of protecting themselves. I wandered over to Dreamwidth as I have a couple of recommendations journals there, but the majority of the fandoms and communities I frequent aren't well represented, or link back to LJ! I very much agree with you--both in terms of how I miss Lj when it's not available, and in my attitude toward Dreamwidth. I just have no interest in picking up all my various bits and pieces and hauling them over there.

Good to see you checking in! How are things down in NZ?

I'm not a very good or regular blogger it must be admitted. :-) I have LJ more for seeing what everyone else is up to than talking about my life.

NZ, well it's cold and it even snowed here, which is something of a novelty where we are (top of the south island). Makes the mountains look wonderful and I'm still ooh and ahhing over the glorious scenery. Got both kids with us, but I think daughter will soon go back to the UK as there isn't much for her here, she's potentially taking a gap year in her degree and trying for some placements.

We're settling in but work is so flat at the mo and I'm too young to be considering retirement (plus I couldn't afford to)! Son is fortunately very happy at school and has made loads of friends so that is all for the good. Hubby has 'man flu' at the mo so very down. When the sun is shines it's glorious and I guess putting up with 3 coldish months isn't too bad. :-)

I find the 'holier than thou' attitude of a lot of people over at DW very tiresome. I have an account there, but never use it for that reason. LJ has its problems, but I'd much rather support it at the moment if the DDoS is an attack on free speech. And all my friends are at LJ.

Sad isn't it, and it's certainly not the owners or support people who are perpetuating it, they were very quick to jump on LJ bashing in the DW update I was reading about LJs problems.

Leaving LJ in the face of the DDoS attacks feels somewhat disloyal, which is a daft thing to think becasue this is a business and I pay for it at the mo. :-) Anyway, like you LJ is where I'm happy so I'm staying. I just hope that the owners can find some better / tighter security as someone out there obviously wants to destroy LJ for some reason or other.

Oh, I missed lj too... Not having it for a few days got me thinking about what it is, and all the brilliant things I've done and people I've met because of it, and really it's probably the bargain of the century, financially (not that I'm saying that loudly, cos I couldn't afford it if it was more expensive...) For me it's a proper social life (online and off) but for other people I gather it's one of the few ways they can communicate and speak freely, and that's why it was attacked. It makes me cross when I see people who just use it for their pr0n fix whinging about how they pay for the service and demanding extra days onto their paid accounts (when lj have always offered this before, without being shouted at!) whilst lj is still struggling to fix things in the first place!

I guess if it ever disappeared forever (hush! don't say that!) then I'd consider DW, but as you say the smug, anti-lj posturing of so many of its members puts me off entirely - which is a shame, cos I do think the creators probably had/have only the best of ( ... )

And do you like the new banner? :-)

Ramble ever onwards to your hearts content. I'd be lost without LJ.

What's up with AofOO? I find it very easy to post my fic up there and it's dead simple to edit.

Yeah, but it's 'orrible to read, and impossible to find anyone's fic unless they send you a direct link. Too many fandoms and pages etc to wade through, and too big, and... just blargh. But mostly I just really don't like the formatting etc...

And yeah, I like the banner... *g* Sherlock was on the other night, and I was in a brief panic in case I'd missed the start of the new series, but it was just my landlady not remembering that it was a repeat - phew! *g*

ETA - also, authors on AOO can force me to be spoiled for their story, and I hate that! Let me choose, as the reader!

So with you! I missed it, but then the family and I were away Thur/Fri thankfully, so I could forget about it and hope for it to be back up by the time we got home yesterday, which thankfully it was. I'm far too lazy to move elsewhere, and LJ do seem to try awfully hard to fix the issues when they happen. Of course, a lot of people are just so impatient and cannot bear waiting five seconds, so they have to moan and threaten to jump afterwards.

Anyway... glad to see you're still alive and well, and surviving the snow! Last week was so cold, wasn't it? Very unusual to see so much snow in NZ! Of course we didn't get any, but it was super-cold up here.

We're just back from Whitianga on the sunny Coromandel, which was lovely - mostly warm and the sun was out much of the time.

I love your icon, where is it taken? Glad the Coromandel was sunny.

Well we had snow flakes and then it went, but in the Moutere valley they were making snowmen! You'll have to come over and see the views and the snow capped mountains.

It's frustrating when LJ is down but when it comes to a huge DDoS attack I guess the best they can do is hang on tight and find ways of counteracting it, which takes time... and patience. :-)

This is from the sunny Coromandel, although we didn't go this place this time around. I have been many times before though - it's Cathedral Cove near Hahei, which was used in the movie 'Prince Caspian' as the children's entry point into Narnia the second time around.

Brrr, snow anytime seems a mite much for my Northern sensibilities, but I bet it was pretty! Would love to have seen it (and more than that, you at your place!) but doubt I'll be down any time soon! Will definitely make it one day though!

It's true what you say on the LJ and DDoS attacks front. I'm willing to wait when I have to, thankfully!
