Knew it was coming, but still don't like it.

This is so depressing. I feel like my dream career is becoming obsolete, and I am devoting myself to something that'll soon be forgotten, or at least archaic.

/emo

But it *does* really illustrate how our culture is changing and paper books may well indeed become a thing of the past. :(

What...no. No no no no no no no. Books are meant to be PAPER, not electronic! Why can't people see that?

Figures they'd go belly-up after I got a Borders Plus account...I hope their website stays open, at least. I remember when Circuit City went under and closed all their stores; they kept their website open.

I'll have to tell my mom about this. Even though we usually go to Barnes and Noble we go to Borders often enough for this to be bad news.

One last bookstore run time, I guess.

I completely agree.

Hmm, I hope that happens too; I like the selection better at Borders than Barnes and Noble.

And you should be able to cheaply buy bookshelves and things like that, too, at places--that's a plus too. But bummer about just having gotten the Plus account! I just had their free members account, but that certainly had some nice deals.

Don't lose hope yet - I know many people will likely object to books becoming entirely electronic.

Still, I feel sad over this, as well. I was recently given a Kindle reader as a gift. Obviously, I couldn't refuse it, but I am reluctant to use it. I might download some classic favourites and utilize the library feature they're going to have soon (and I'm bound to be asked whether I'm using it or not), but, otherwise...I hate reading books from a screen. I need to have the story in my hands. It just doesn't feel right in any other way or form. I don't mind packing a thick novel or two books for a long road trip or something. I don't mind worn covers and a few bent pages! I love visiting a bookstore and a library, and browsing through endless rows of books. Books remind me of those who could only use the written word to get their revolutionary ideas heard; beliefs they lived and died for ( ... )

Rally 'em up! ;)

Ah, that's a tough situation. I've received well-meaning gifts like that before from people it's better not to tell the truth to.

I like your paragraph--inspiring and beautifully written!

That line sounds familiar to me too, but I can't think of where, naturally. I really like it.

Yes, ma'am!

Plus, I don't buy books that often enough to really get a use out of it. :/ I wish they hadn't spent that much on me. If they really wanted to, I would have preferred a top-of-the-line laptop that didn't overheat at all!

Thanks!

Your laptop overheats regularly? I guess I was thinking it was because the weather was so warm up there too. That's terrible! I remember my old laptop was like that too--fan constantly on and loud. But that whole model from Gateway had an overheating problem--people would get burned sometimes if they actually put the computers on their lap.

I saw that Borders was closing and nearly cried. :(

I approve of e-books for things like long-term travel, where it's impossible to carry as many books as you want with you and it's handy to have everything you need in one place. And I understand people who get e-texbooks, given the size of the average textbook. This is the extent of my like for e-books! Give me good ol' paper any day!
