Knew it was coming, but still don't like it.

This is so depressing. I feel like my dream career is becoming obsolete, and I am devoting myself to something that'll soon be forgotten, or at least archaic.

But it *does* really illustrate how our culture is changing and paper books may well indeed become a thing of the past. :(

Don't lose hope yet - I know many people will likely object to books becoming entirely electronic.

Still, I feel sad over this, as well. I was recently given a Kindle reader as a gift. Obviously, I couldn't refuse it, but I am reluctant to use it. I might download some classic favourites and utilize the library feature they're going to have soon (and I'm bound to be asked whether I'm using it or not), but, otherwise...I hate reading books from a screen. I need to have the story in my hands. It just doesn't feel right in any other way or form. I don't mind packing a thick novel or two books for a long road trip or something. I don't mind worn covers and a few bent pages! I love visiting a bookstore and a library, and browsing through endless rows of books. Books remind me of those who could only use the written word to get their revolutionary ideas heard; beliefs they lived and died for.

We are going too far with this. Who was it that said, "They were so wrapped up in whether they could do it, they never stopped to consider whether they should?" I think it was from a movie. The quote can be applied to a lot of things.

Rally 'em up! ;)

Ah, that's a tough situation. I've received well-meaning gifts like that before from people it's better not to tell the truth to.

I like your paragraph--inspiring and beautifully written!

That line sounds familiar to me too, but I can't think of where, naturally. I really like it.

Yes, ma'am!

Plus, I don't buy books that often enough to really get a use out of it. :/ I wish they hadn't spent that much on me. If they really wanted to, I would have preferred a top-of-the-line laptop that didn't overheat at all!

Thanks!

Your laptop overheats regularly? I guess I was thinking it was because the weather was so warm up there too. That's terrible! I remember my old laptop was like that too--fan constantly on and loud. But that whole model from Gateway had an overheating problem--people would get burned sometimes if they actually put the computers on their lap.

Just when I've been on it for awhile. It never used to really do that, or maybe I've never really noticed. I've been reading about how we can clean the fan ourselves, though. We'll see. :/ But I think it did overheat fast that one time with the hot weather. Ouch, that's bad! Mine's a Toshiba - I had been hoping to get a Dell (Toshiba was also the brand of my last one, which lasted five years), but it was too expensive. I've used a Mac before, but it seems too complicated for someone like me. :D

Hmm, I should learn how to do that too. Just something handy to know. I think my older sister had a Dell--she's had all kinds of problems with it. I haven't had any trouble with my Asus yet. In general, I have learned to look for Japanese or Korean models for electronics (and cars); they seem to last the best. Christian's Toshiba has still been kicking, too, and it's fairly old. He had it for a few years and then I took it to Japan. But now we don't use it except rarely.

I do understand the expense part. I splurged a bit with mine--so it better last a good several years!

I also do hear good things about Macs too, but I just hate them too much to try them out, heh.

Hmm, I've always heard Dell was the top of the line for Windows 7. :( Well, that's good to know. But there's probably never going to be a top computer. :/ Thanks for the tip! Does/did he have problems with it overheating too quickly?

Yeah, it hurt to spend more money on this, but it's a machine I use often and is a good investment. ^_^

It seemed like a trend, at first. I'm good with my ol' Windows. :)

Really? Maybe my sister just had a bad machine. I don't think Christian has had any problem with his laptop overheating too quickly. I seem to recall that happened only with my Gateway. Have you tried mounting it on two blocks? My bro-in-law said that a laptop shouldn't be flush-up against a surface or it will overheat easier. So he gave us small blocks to set it on just to get it off the table/desk/whatever. Then again, that Gateway model of mine was designed to sit on a slant and not be flush with the table, and it STILL had heating problems.

I wish they wouldn't vary so much like that, one working for another, etc. It'd be nice to buy a tried-and-true model and be done with it. :| Ha, ha, I mounted it on a mini-dictionary and thesaurus for now, just to see what happens.
