Books and more

Can't remember if I mentioned this, but I finished If I Stay sometime last week. The author did a great job of conveying a realistic high school experience. I've found that most books, TV shows, and films about high school that I've seen don't reflect my experience at all. Instead, they are more like what happened in college, which is strange to me ( Read more... )

I'll definitely check out If I Stay! I relate way too much to the Buffy/Angel story line. So much that Bangel fic is huge squick for me. Sigh. Also, parts of season 3, which sucks because Faith is AWESOME and should get more love from me.

Haha "Bangel" is a great name! Buffy/Angel was my second OTP (after Green Ranger/Pink Ranger from Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers) I think partly because it was so far off from my boy experiences. Also, it appealed to my early teenage sensibilities.

There are certain pairings or moments in TV shows/movies/books I am not fond of seeing now, that I was OK with when I first encountered them. Most of the things that are squicky to me are due to other reasons, like Hagrid/Giant Squid cause I don't like bestiality very much in general.

LOL ICON! ♥

I've never seen a TV show like my high school experience. I was angry and did lots of weird shit to my hair and people thought I was kind of scary. But really I was an AP student who played the cello and read a lot of poetry. I had a boyfriend. I went to parties and snuck around and did some sketchy things, but nothing all that bad. It all happened in rural Connecticut in the late 80s. My high school was terrible.

I got it from chickadilly. :)

I enjoyed high school, but I wouldn't repeat it. No crazy boy experiences. Mostly unrequited crushes. I came home mostly on time. I had a couple OMG BIG DRAMA moments, but they were so few and far between. They make for a good story now!

So far, about a fifth of the way through maybe, Anita Blake has not had sex. There has been lots of "oh my god I am so attracted but I must look away!!!!" moments. It's really strange. One thing I really like is how cruel the vampires and other creatures are. It's a great contrast to the vampire "vegetarians" like Bill in True Blood and Edward in the Twilight series.

I think part of the brilliance of FNL is you don't have to care about football to really enjoy the show - it's just one of the pieces. The characters, the relationships - all of that are very solid in and out of any football game scenes. Having gone to high school in Texas I can say there are parts of FNL that remind me of some of my experience (I was in marching band so I got my fill of Texas high school football including winning a State Championship) but then there are things in FNL that are much more small town, West TX kind of experiences as opposed to my Dallas suburban one.

I really liked going to football games in high school, but rarely because I wanted to watch a game. :) Our team was TERRIBLE my junior year- lost every game. It was embarrassing. I went to hang out with friends and see the band perform. I had lots of friends in marching band. Senior year, I got to emcee the homecoming parade at half-time. Besides that, wasn't part of the culture at all!

It's interesting to see a small more confined town, with a very clear identity. Everything here in SoCal sprawls. There are cities of +80,000 people right next to each other.

I did enjoy the character development in the pilot. They fit in a lot of information!!
