When Lulu passed me a small package wrapped in delicate white paper, I realised with a start it was my birthday.  I’d forgotten all about it, focusing all my attentions on being the best summoner I could be, which didn’t leave much time for thinking about birthdays.  No one else had remembered either, not even Kimahri, which I was a bit surprised at - he’s looked after me since I was seven, and he’d never forgotten until now.  Maybe he didn’t want to remember.  I suppose it must have been hard for the people I grew up around - Lulu, Wakka, and Kimahri - to watch me grow a year older and know that they would never see me celebrate another year, because if everything went to plan I would have defeated Sin within the next year.  I would be dead, and maybe they would too, or maybe they’d be here without me.

“You’re not a child any more, Yuna,” Lulu told me quietly.  The others had gone on ahead, leaving us to our girl talk.

“I know, Lulu,” I said.  “I haven’t been a child since I became a summoner.”

“You should wear this, then,” she said, indicating the package in my hand.  “It’s time you had something vaguely un-childlike.”  And she turned away and hurried after the others.

I looked at the present.  It was very un-Luluish, white with a yellow ribbon tying it together.  It was small, and when I shook it gently it clunked.  Undoing the wrapper, I discovered it was a small box with a pot of red smelly liquid in it.  It took me a minute to recognise it as a red version of the paint Lulu always used on her nails.  Never having worn nail paint or makeup or anything like that, I supposed it would be a good idea to wait and ask Lulu how to put it on.  I didn’t really want to make a complete mess.

-------

In the evening, when Wakka and Tidus were busy practicing the Jecht Shot and Sir Auron was… well, I think he may have been daydreaming, actually, I sat down next to Lulu.

“Um, Lulu?” I said.  “How do I use the nail paint?”

“Well, to start you stand far away from the fire, as it will explode if it gets too hot,” Lulu said.  I moved a few metres away.

“Ooh, Yunie, is that red nail paint?  Where’d you get that?” Rikku said.

“Lulu gave it to me,” I said.

“So, what are you guys doing?” Rikku asked.

“I’m giving Yuna a lesson on how to use it,” Lulu said.  Rikku raised an eyebrow.

“You’ve never used nail paint before, Yunie?” she asked.  I shook my head.  “Well, enjoy.  I’m going to go see if Kimahri has any food.”  Lulu watched her go with a sigh of exasperation.

-------

I woke up sometime in the night and sleepily wondered where Rikku was.  Her bedroll was empty and when I touched it it was also cold, so she must have been gone for a while.

“Rikku?” I whispered, not able to see if she was nearby in the pitch blackness of the night.

“Over here, Yunie,” she replied.

“What are you doing?” I asked, sitting up.  I heard her footsteps come close to me and then her hands pressed my shoulders back to the ground.

“Go back to sleep, Yunie,” she whispered.  “You’ll see in the morning.”  I could hear the laughter in her voice.

“You’re not doing something… dangerous, are you?” I whispered tentatively.

“Nope, and I’m not eating all the food either so calm down, miss summoner, and wait until you can see for yourself,” she whispered firmly.  I sighed and rolled over onto my side, quickly falling back asleep despite my curiosity at what was causing Rikku’s suppressed giggles.

--------

Morning dawned, and I climbed out of my bedroll to see everyone but Kimahri sitting around the fire eating breakfast.  I pulled a disgusted face once I’d turned away to fold up my bedroll, not wanting to seem ungrateful for the food but not very pleased with the menu - Zu steaks were notoriously bitter.

“Where’s Kimahri?” I asked as Tidus passed me a plate of Zu steak.

“To work out some anger on our lunch,” Tidus said.  “He said he’d be back once he’d defeated enough Zus to feed us today.”

“Why is he angry?” I asked, washing down a mouthful of repulsive steak with a large gulp of water.

“Don’t try to play innocent, Yuna,” he said teasingly.  “You know why he’s mad.”

“No I don’t,” I said, then looked at Rikku.  “Rikku - what did you do to him last night?”  Rikku turned to me with a grin, then squeaked as she saw Kimahri emerge from round the corner.

I tried to suppress the giggle, I really did.  But the sight of Kimahri with a bright red horn, and seeing Rikku turn pale and jump behind Auron was so funny I couldn’t help myself.  Seeing Auron move swiftly out of the way, leaving Rikku to defend herself in the face of Kimahri’s wrath was even funnier.

“Oh, Rikku put blame on Yuna, did she?” Kimahri said.  Rikku gulped audibly.

“Erm… yesbutitwasjustabitoffundon’thurtmeKimahri!” she gabbled.

“That not a nice thing to do to Yuna,” Kimahri said.  Rikku cowered, then gaped at him as he took her plate from her hands and proceeded to eat it.  Rikku loved Zu steaks.  Revenge must have been sweet
