No, don’t do it! I scream, throwing my arms out and standing in front of Vegnagun. I’m not worth it, Shuyin, not worth dooming the world. He looks at me, an expression I can’t read on his face. Maybe he didn’t even hear me over the noise of the monstrosity that lies behind me. It’s hard to tell when I can’t read what lies behind the grey eyes I can normally read so well.
When the cold of winter comes
Starless night will cover day
In the veiling of the sun
We will walk in bitter rain
He starts when the sound of footsteps reaches our ears simultaneously. Quick footsteps. Lots of footsteps running towards us. Shuyin jumps over the railing of the balcony he’s standing on and sprints towards me. He stops a few feet away from me, and he looks at me. My expression doesn’t change, but something in his does and he steps forward, pulling me into his arms.
I glance sideways at the soldiers. They crouch down, squinting down the barrels of their guns to make sure their aim is perfect. I tense, suddenly afraid. A sudden desperation fills me and I look back at Shuyin, needing some form of comfort but unable to have any in this enclosed death trap.
Love washes over me in a strange replacement of desperation and I look into his grey eyes. They hold so much emotion that it threatens to spread to my own and flow out in the form of hot tears.
But in dreams
I can hear your name
And in dreams
We will meet again
There is no time for tears though, or goodbyes, or kisses, or anything other than what I do - rest my head on his chest and listen to his heart’s last beats, rapid in the knowledge that they are numbered. And as I lie on the floor moments later, feeling the life drain out of me as I watch the life drain out of him, I wonder if he noticed the kiss I placed on his chest.
When the seas and mountains fall
And we come, to end of days
In the dark I hear a call
Calling me there,
I will go there
And back again
