“Yami, I think we should have a fight.”
These were not words that Yami expected to hear, and he sat up and turned around on the couch, furrowing his eyebrows at Yugi, who was standing in the entryway of their living room. Yugi had come in and said he wanted to ask Yami something, but this wasn’t really a question Yami anticipated. “Wait…what?!”
“I think we need to have a fight.” Yugi repeated patiently.
“And the purpose would be…?” Yami asked, still incredibly puzzled. He and Yugi had fought maybe twice in their lives, and they hadn’t fought at all since becoming a real ‘couple.’ They both hated fighting anyway, so Yami couldn’t see why Yugi was in any hurry.
“Well, I’ve been thinking. The first fight a couple has is always the one that they have the most danger of breaking up during. So why don’t we have one, get it done with…and then we won’t have anything to worry about.”
Yami was still confused, but he guessed he understood where Yugi was coming from and decided to indulge him. “Okay…so…what’re we going to fight about?”
“I don’t know.” Yugi shrugged with a wry grin. “I had the idea, you start it. What’s something about me that annoys you?”
“Okay…” Yami rested his chin on the back of the couch and thought about it. “Um…you apologize too much.”
“What?” Yugi looked sort of hurt.
“You apologize too much, you apologize for every little thing like you think I’m gonna flip out on you. And I’ve tried to tell you over and over that I’m never gonna just freak out. You should trust me when I promise I won’t get mad at you. Okay, there you go, you apologize too much, is that good enough? Now what’s something about me that annoys you?”
Yugi hesitated. “You…you’re too over-protective. Everything I do, you worry about. I go out for a drive and say I’ll be home at 2:00, and I come home at 2:30 and find you about ready to call the police and the FBI and everything else in the book. You need to lighten up with always freaking out.”
“Well sorry. I can’t help worrying about you!!” Yami said, sounding upset. “I care about you, so of course I’m going to worry!”
“Well, I can’t help apologizing when I think I need to.” Yugi returned, still feeling somewhat stung.
“I suppose you want me to find something else now that annoys me, right?” Yami asked. “Okay, how about this, you…you worry too much about what everyone else is gonna think and you hide your feelings. Goes hand-in-hand with the apologizing thing. You need to lighten up too.”
“Yeah, well YOU’RE too worrisome. I mean I mention the slightest little thing wrong and you get all up in arms and want to fix it, like you think I’m going to become insanely depressed if one little thing goes wrong, and I’ve told you I’ll be fine.”
“You already used my worrying as a reason to be annoyed!”
“Well, you pretty much double-used a reason too!”
“That’s because I can’t even think of an actual real reason how you annoy me! I happen to actually think it’s really cute how you always apologize! I just used it cause it’s something other people might find annoying!”
“Well I can’t think of any either! And I happen to think it’s pretty sweet how protective you get and how much you care! I just used it too because it’s all I could think of that might bother other people!”
“This having a fight idea was really stupid, you know that?!”
“Well, it obviously worked, we’re fighting!”
“Yeah, for the most dumbass reason I ever heard of!”
“It’s still a fight, it still counts!”
“Well it’s a stupid fight!”
“I’d like to see you start a better one!”
“Okay, then maybe I will!”
The room went silent while they caught their breaths. They met eyes. Yami felt a smile creep over his face. Yugi seemed to be struggling with something, but then let out a giggle. Yami bit his lip, but he started to laugh before he could stop. That set Yugi off, and suddenly they both just exploded with laughing.
“Okay…so…is the fight over?” Yami asked between laughs, wiping tears out of his eyes.
“Yeah…I guess so.” Yugi giggled.
Yami got to his feet. “So can we make up from it now?” He asked, holding out his arms.
“I think so. I forgive you for loving me so much.” Yugi replied with a smile, and ran forward to hug him. Yami hugged him back tightly and grinned.
“I forgive you too.”
