Title: Life's Lessons
Author: The awesome Chey. Know it. Respect it. Fear it.
Pairing: YamixYugi
Fandom: Yugioh
Rating: G for random fluff
Theme: #12 “Faith is believing in something when common sense tells you not to.”
Summary: Yami muses about the connection between his past and his present, and ends up taking a step towards his future.
Extra: Yes, I know it leaves off on a cliffhanger. xD It's supposed to!
Life dictates that you have to learn from the past. Yami knew that. Except that his past was nothing more than a blank empty stretch, and all he could remember was never-ending blackness. Numbness. Lack of all emotions, unable to feel pain, love, fear, hope…faith. That was his past, a huge canvas that could have anything drawn on it, but that couldn’t be seen because it had been covered in black paint.
So what had he learned from it?
Nothing really. All he’d learned was that he hated being alone. He’d learned that eternal numbness was far worse than any physical pain. He’d learned that faith was useless since sitting around believing he’d escape the darkness hadn’t done him a damn thing. And none of those lessons were ones he wanted to relearn in a hurry.
As he stood in the room, an invisible soul merely existing among the living, he gazed on Yugi as he thought, long and hard, about what was right and what was just foolish.
Yami’s sensibility was all that had kept him alive in that darkness. If he’d allowed his heart and emotions to rule himself he would have never made it out, he’d have been destroyed by it instantly. Only a deep stubbornness allowed him to keep his sanity and regain it when he reached the real world. That, and the fact that Yugi had solved the Puzzle.
A feat he’d always perceived as impossible…and a feat that almost made him rethink his lessons he’d spent 5000 years learning. If it was true that one should never have faith in anything, then how was it possible that he was standing here in this room, instead of still locked in the Puzzle?
He shook his head. Thinking about this before never got him anywhere. Common sense, a trust in only himself, and a little helpful push of destiny that had brought him to Yugi, that’s what had gotten him here…not sitting on his butt believing that someone would save him, and certainly not faith.
But what did that help for his new problem? If his past taught him that waiting and assuming nothing would ever work out was the right choice, and if common sense said screw waiting entirely, just give up hope now, which should he listen to? Certainly none of his past lessons had ever prepared him for what it was like to be in love.
At that moment Yugi seemed to sense something and turned, and he saw Yami there. A smile lit up his face for a moment, and then he looked away, his cheeks pink.
Yami felt himself smile too. Well maybe he didn’t need to be prepared. Maybe he didn’t even need his past lessons this time. After all, if love was so confusing, maybe it was time to abandon the old lessons completely and learn some new ones. Maybe it was time to admit that this time around…faith was all he had. He stood and walked over to Yugi.
“Aibou?”
“Hmmn?” Yugi turned to face him curiously.
“Can I…talk to you about something?”
