“In order to have the relationship you desire, you need to have the ability to communicate your feelings. Take a few moments now to write a letter to the one you love. It does not have to be addressed to anyone in particular, and if you don’t have a specific person in mind, then write what you will say when you do find the person you want to be with.”

Humming to himself, Yugi picked up his pencil and bent over the workbook. ‘Yami…’ He stopped, erased, and replaced it with, ‘Dear Yami…’ He smiled at the words and began writing.

In the other room the doorbell rang. Sighing, he turned off the CD and went to answer it, his thoughts still circling blissfully around finding the perfect words to profess his feelings in the letter, until he saw who was outside, and the bliss vanished.

“Mom…Dad…” Yugi blinked, holding the door open. “Did we have something planned?”

“No, we were just in the neighbourhood and decided to stop by,” they replied, breezing inside before Yugi could say anything else. He watched helplessly, wishing he’d cleaned up the apartment a little that morning. Or at least closed the door to his bedroom, where the bed was still unmade and his pajamas were tossed on the floor. He carefully steered them away into the kitchen area, where he saw the open workbook and felt another bolt of panic. Leaning against the table to nonchalantly close it with his elbow, he asked, “Can I get you anything to drink? I’ll make some tea. Or I have sake, if you would prefer.”

“No thanks, it’s fine. We’ve been rude enough as it is by just barging in, you don’t need to get anything. We just wanted to see you.”

“Okay.” He paused. His father sat down on the couch while his mother studied the table, cluttered with newspapers, textbooks, and anything else that it had been convenient to throw there. He felt it prudent to speak up and add, “Tomorrow’s cleaning day. You’re seeing it at its worst.”

“Hmn…” She brightened suddenly and picked up one of the books. “Oh, you received our package then?”

Yugi groaned mentally. Now he understood the point of this impromptu visit. Of course she would zero in on the Ten Steps to Love book, it had most likely been her idea to send him the program in the first place. His father had only ever shown a mild irritation about Yugi’s inability to keep a girlfriend, but his mother had scrutinized him like a hawk…

If she doesn’t ask about it, he vowed, I will clean this place and keep it spotless until the day I move out…

“Did you finish it?”

His breath exploded from him in a sigh. So much for that. “Working on it,” he muttered. He elected not to add that it had already done its job of revealing who he really loved, and that now he simply used the exercises as excuses to think about Yami for hours on end.

“So exactly what kind of questions do they ask, anyway?” She asked, picking up the workbook. Yugi paled.

Oh damn.

“Mom, don’t, it’s really boring,” he interjected, trying to grab the book first, and failing.

She ignored him and flipped the workbook open. Yugi froze, and his cheeks reddened as he noticed her and his father skimming one of the pages, looking progressively confused.

“You…wrote down Yami’s name a lot.” She finally said.

“Yeah.”

“It’s the answer to nearly all of these.” His father noted.

“Yeah…”

“For this exercise, try writing your feelings out in a letter. You don’t need to use anyone’s name.” She read aloud from the page he’d just been on, and they both glanced up questioningly as she said, “You addressed it to Yami.”

He hid his face in his hands. At the time he’d had fun, enjoying the fuzzy warm feeling he got every time he wrote Yami’s name, but hearing it said aloud made him feel slightly pathetic. “Yes…it’s Yami, okay?”

“What?”

“It’s Yami. He’s the reason I haven’t been able to stay in a relationship, the reason I always break up with people, the reason you sent me this ridiculous program in the first place. You were right, okay? I was trying to make those other relationships fail. Because they weren’t the right ones. Yami’s the right one.”

“Yugi…?”

“I love him…it took me all these years and all those failed girlfriends and a CD of some stranger asking me whose face I saw, but I realized it and…I’m in love with Yami.”

Strangely, they didn’t react. Yugi finally glanced up at them. “Um…Mom? Dad?”

Still silent.

“Er…if you’re really angry at me…or really upset…could you just let me know? Instead of being quiet like this?”

“Does Yami know about this?” His father finally asked.

“No.”

“Well, why haven’t you told him?”

“Mom…?” Yugi was confused at the exasperation in her voice.

“It’s unusual enough as it is for someone his age to be single so long, you wait any longer and he’s going to get tired of waiting for you!”

“I…” Yugi paused. “You think he’s waiting for me?”

“Well, who else is he waiting for?”

Ordinarily Yugi shrugged off his parents’ claims that all people had the primal desire to be with somebody as an old-fashioned rule pounded into them. However now, for the first time, he found himself hoping they were right. Yami had been asked out before, yet he had never taken anybody up on the offer. Maybe he was waiting on someone.

But if his parents were encouraging him to take the plunge before Yami gave up and accepted a date from someone else…did that mean…?

“So…this is okay with you? You…aren’t angry?” He asked tentatively.

“Yugi, we’ve watched you get in and out of relationships for years. If you’re finally considering settling down, why would we be angry?”

“But…he’s…well he’s not a girl. I thought…you probably wouldn’t approve…you wouldn’t want to have to explain to your friends that I’m not…normal.”

“Yugi.” His mother held the book open to the page with his half-written letter. “You wrote this to Yami. You told him, ‘you’re the only person in the world that makes my life complete by just existing.’ You just told us flat out that you love him. I’ve waited forever for you to get serious. I admit…I expected you to settle down with a girlfriend, not a man, and certainly not him specifically. But if you’re saying Yami is ‘the one,’ you should go after him. If you love someone, wanting to be with them is normal.”

Yugi glanced at his father. “Dad?”

“I still think Maya was a nice girl,” he said slowly. “And I'd have even preferred any of the other women to...him. But I agree with your mother. It will take some getting used to…but your happiness comes first. If this man…is really your happiness…then that’s what matters. Our friends will just have to accept it.”

A smile spreading over his face, he threw his arms around them both, saying as he stepped away, “Thank you, Dad…Mom…I’m so happy to hear that…”

His mother set the book down on the table and picked up her purse. “Well Yugi, we’ve got to be going.”

“Wait, you’re sure you don’t want a drink?” He asked, following them to the door, puzzled about their sudden need to leave.

“We’re sure. And besides…” his father nodded pointedly at the table. “You have a letter to finish writing.”

“And someone you need to talk to!” His mother added brightly.

They waved and shut the door quickly. Yugi shook his head, amused, and went back to the table with a somewhat lighter heart. Fear of his family’s reaction had been part of why he’d kept silent. Fear of Yami’s reaction was the other part. Now he could only hope the second part would go as well as the first.

But in the meantime, he still had another two chapters of innocent reasons to write Yami’s name.

Notes: Yugi's parents so amuse me in this/these fics. All they care about is that he's in a relationship. xD
I'm considering a third part to this, of a cliche confession-Iloveyou-Iloveyoutoo!fic. Anybody interested, or is it  just pointless, considering we all know how this ends. xD (Or maybe the third part could be his parents make him invite Yami over after they become a couple. That might be more fun. xP)
Fics about Yugi's parents not approving are pretty common, so here's something a bit different. They approve! His father only grudgingly, but an approval is an approval.
Happy birthday Yugi~
