“Hey, Yami?”
“Hmn?” Yami, whose eyes had been half-closed in an expression of lazy contentment, looked down at the boy in his arms. Yugi was looking back up at him with that “idea” sparkle in his eyes that Yami had seen there before many times. Wryly he hoped that whatever idea Yugi had wouldn’t involve moving, because he’d gotten extremely comfortable where he was, lying back on the couch with Yugi stretched out over him, his chin on Yami’s chest and Yami’s arms wrapped snuggly around him.
“There’s something I’ve been thinking about for awhile. And I want to know what you think of it.”
“Okay.”
“Okay…” Yugi echoed, and took a deep breath, cheeks flushing. “Yami…I want to move in with you.”
“What?” Yami lifted his head.
“I want to move in with you.” He fidgeted with Yami’s shirt. “Think about it, you’ve got a perfectly nice apartment but you never see it because you’re nearly always over here. And I’m tired of my mom sighing every time she walks into a room and finds us kissing.” He noted that Yami’s expression was not one of joy, and offered nervously, “I promise I’ll make up somehow for any difference in your water and electric bills.”
“No, no, I’m not worried about bills. It’s just…moving in together…? Isn’t that sort of a…big step?”
“Well…yes. I guess so.” Yugi’s eyebrows furrowed slightly. “But we’ve been together a long time, it seems about time for a new step.”
“Yeah but isn’t it kind of soon for that sort of step? You’re still taking classes, and…”
“What does taking classes have to do with anything?”
“It just seems too soon to…do something as drastic as living together!”
“Yami…” Yugi lifted himself up a bit, noticing a definite sharpness in Yami’s tone. “If you really hate the idea, it’s alright, you don’t have to say yes. I just thought…”
“No…Yugi, no, I don’t hate it.” He sighed, pushing himself up. Yugi got off him and sat up too. “It’s just…moving in together is…really big.”
“Not really in the long run though…we’d still have the same lives, school and work and stuff. We’d just be spending free time and nights at your apartment instead of here. If it makes you feel better, I asked my parents a few weeks ago, they said it would be okay.”
“I know, I know not much would change. I just think…there’s something about moving in together that makes a relationship so much more…serious sounding.”
Yugi was quiet for a long time. Then, in a subdued voice: “Yami…are you trying to say that you’re considering that we break up?”
Yami’s eyes widened as he waved his arms frantically. “No! No, I’m not saying anything like that! I definitely don’t want to break up. I’m just saying that making such a serious change is…well, a big deal.”
“But…if you don’t want things to be serious…I like the way things are now, but I can’t live at home forever. If you’re not okay with someday making a serious change like moving in together, then…breaking up is…the only thing…” Yugi just felt sick.
“No! Yugi, no, I didn’t mean it that way at all…I’m perfectly okay with making the relationship more serious, I just…”
“Just what?” Yugi demanded, stung.
“I’m nervous, okay?”
Yugi frowned. “Nervous? About what?”
“Nothing…it’s something stupid, it’s nothing.”
“No, tell me. What are you afraid of?”
Yami reached out and took Yugi’s hands gently, glad to see that Yugi didn’t pull them away. “See…in my heart I know…I know I love you and I really really want to spend my life with you, I do. I can’t imagine spending it with anyone else. And of course living together is involved in those plans. I love you…I want to live with you and go through everyday life together. I want that as my future more than anything.”
Yugi’s mouth twitched into a shy smile despite himself.
“But at the same time…neither of us has really dated much besides each other. And we’re both young, and…I’m afraid if we rush into things…that someday you’ll regret rushing. Because…I’ve got nothing to give you. I’m broke, I have the world’s tiniest apartment, I don’t even have a car. What can I promise you with that? Not the world, not comfort or wealth…I can’t even promise happiness. And if we moved in together now, it feels like that’s sort of making things final. Like we’re agreeing flat-out that we’re spending forever together, which is what I want! But if I never gave you a chance to back out and go pursue wealth and comfort…I couldn’t live with myself. I want you to have a chance at freedom before you go making commitments to me.”
“So you’re afraid moving in too soon is going to make me want to leave you?”
“In so many words.”
“Oh Yami…”
“Please don’t be angry…I just don’t want to offer you something I can’t actually give. There’s no promise…that I’ll be able to offer you happiness. And I don’t want to take things to the next step now if it’s going to make you feel trapped…and end up being our final step.”
Yugi pursed his lips, looking thoughtful. “Is there anything you can promise me?”
Yami looked up, into his eyes. “That whatever choice you make, I’ll always love you.”
His expression suddenly soft again, Yugi smiled, reached out, and hugged him. “Yami, you never needed to promise me anything more than that.”
“But…”
“I don’t care if we spend our lives in a mansion or a trailer. I don’t care if things are tough or if we have to scrimp or how many expensive gifts you can or can’t afford. Why would I care about something stupid like that? We’ll work together, and if we’re part of the middle-class forever, who cares? As long as I know at the end of the day that you love me…why would I need more?”
“Some people want more.”
“Well, I don’t.”
Yami hugged him back, his head resting on his shoulder. “You’re sure?”
“I’m positive.”
“Then start boxing up your things.”
“Really?” Yugi pulled back, his eyes shining. “You mean it?”
“Sure.” Yami smiled at Yugi’s obvious happiness. “Though, I’m sure I’ll get nervous again and start over-thinking things again someday. Be prepared.”
“I’m devising counter-arguments as we speak. Yami, thank you!” Yugi beamed and threw his arms back around him, planting a long kiss on his lips. “I love you…”
“I love you, too.” Yami stroked his hair as they kissed again.
At that moment Yugi’s mother walked into the living room, saw them, sighed, and walked back out shaking her head and calling, “tell me when it’s clear.”
Yugi and Yami met eyes and started giggling.
“You know, now that I know the occurrences will be limited, I’m almost going to miss that,” Yami mused.
“Yeah,” Yugi agreed. “Me too.”
“Maybe, after you get settled in, we could come over here every now and then just for old time’s sake.”
“Sounds like a date.” Yugi propped himself back up on Yami’s chest, a secretive glint suddenly appearing in his eyes. “Hey…”
“What’s on your mind?” Yami asked warily.
“Well…if moving in together is a serious step but not the last step…does that mean that getting married will be the next step after it?”
Yami reddened instantly.

Notes: Hurray, ambiguous ending. xD Not a whole lot else to say about this. Yugi's supposed to be in college. Yami just seems to me like someone that would be worried about not providing EVERYTHING under the sun for Yugi, so it was just too easy to decide to make this one be from his POV. However seeing as I got Yugi to move in with him...I think I'm safe from being shot today. Harhar. Oh, and for anyone that's curious, Yami's job is working in a bookstore. Because he likes books. xD
