I'd just tape some wax paper down and use that. It's a lot easier to clean up!

Yeah, wax paper would work, or if you have a large cookie sheet?

But in general, I believe that parchment paper is a happy thing, especially when baking cookies, because you can use that instead of greasing the cookie sheet. And you can use the same sheet once or twice (on the same batch of cookies, mind) so you feel like you're not wasting paper.
