Skyler arrived as promised, toting his bag on his shoulder. He didn't really know much about planting, but figured it couldn't be too different from how it worked in his world...dig a hole, plant a seed, let it grow over the next few days. He spotted Maes already at work planting and called out a greeting to him.

Maes smiled as he saw the Chimchar show up. "Hello, Skyler! You're the first to show up! Want to come on over here?" Guessing that Skyler was here to help work, Maes took him to where the turnips would be planted. "These are important! A young woman named Meru misses turnips, and I'd like her to have some."

Skyler nodded his understanding. He had no idea what a turnip was, but if it was important to someone he'd gladly plant a bunch. So he set about digging up small holes for seeds, pretty sure that was the first thing he needed to do to help out with planting. he made the holes in a lot of neat little rows too.

Maes nodded, watching Skyler work. "Nicely done! You've planted before?"

Riza had arrived at Maes' house earlier that day to drop off her few material possessions and lock up her rifle (she kept her pistol on her person in case something came up), then made her way to the greenhouse.

As she entered the greenhouse, she found Skyler and Maes kneeling on the ground, digging some holes. She smiled and approached them.

"So, what are you planting?"

Maes waved her on over to join them. "Here, we're planting turnips! You can help with that, or over there, we're planting watermelons! I've got potatoes ready a bit farther down, as well as garlic. My own project is the tomato plants! They'll be in the shape of Elysia's head! I have a few other things to plant still beyond that, but those are the important things."

"You are going to spoil that girl so much that she won't know what to do in a few years," Riza said as she made her way over, taking off her jacket in the process. She looked around for a moment and inhaled the rich, earthy smells. It was nice, being able to give herself over to something that was almost overlooked in Amestris, but was such a precious commodity here.

"I think I'll get started on the potatoes."

She headed down the row and laid her jacket down for a kneeling pad. It was time to get her hands dirty for a good cause.

Maes grinned. "Oh, believe me, I discipline my daughter too. She knows what's right and wrong, and how far to push Daddy. I'll spoil her but teach her too."

He nodded at her choice. "That's a good one. It's a staple for some people! And it will help stretch out meals, just in case things get sparse!"

Looking after plants was an idle activity. It took great care to properly grow them, and while Neji knew this and some basics of gardening, he'd only ever had a few plants in his house to take care of. Only consisting on watering them once or twice a day, not much more thought was put into it-though he had weeded several gardens as a Genin, and planted and harvested a few crops on farms, but still nothing like daily care. The Greenhouse looked nice, however, and he still maintained that it was an excellent idea. Plants might be able to be grown all year round with the addition, and it could do wonders for the world and it's residents as a whole ( ... )

Maes had begun the careful transplant of the tomato plants one by one when Neji entered. He waved the young man over. "It is! I've been wanting to get this going more strongly! We need the food, and..." He grinned, shrugging. He didn't need to say it could help bring people together.

Glancing down at the task at hand, Maes nodded. "I would! You've got steady hands, right? This is the most important task. I'm planting these in the shape of my precious daughter's head! This way everyone can come in and enjoy the sight of perfection! Artistry and practicality at the same time!"

He nudged a trowel with his foot. "Join me?"

..Oh god Neji doesn't know what he's in for, huh? heavenly_earth June 9 2009, 23:44:23 UTC
Neji smiled pleasantly. Maes was kind enough- obsessed though he was with his daughter. The Hyuuga could understand somewhat, the dedication one feels toward their child. Maes was fortunate to have his daughter there with him; even if it might not be a pleasant experience otherwise. He understood what he was trying to say.

"Hm..." A note of amusement threaded through his voice, and he secured his sleeves in attempt to save them from dirtying. "I'm honored to be gifted with such a task, Maes-san- though I fear I do not know your daughter well enough to arrange them appropriately. You will need to be specific."

His eyes flicked over to Yuki as he approached. The name was familiar... Ah yes. "Yuki-san." Neji inclined his head in greeting; his hands too dirty and the space cramped for much else. "A friend of Obito-kun's, correct? Did you find residence somewhere...?" An eyebrow inched up and disappeared underneath his headband as the other flustered suddenly.

Really, he wasn't interested in gardening. Not in the slightest - but when Maes did something like this he knew there were other motives. Nothing Maes planned came without some underlying thought - and perhaps his undying love and devotion for Elysia was quite easily the most honest thing Roy could pin to the man.

Upon arrival he wandered into the doorway of the greenhouse, arms folding across his chest as he leant against the doorway, watching everyone. It was oddly comforting, especially to see Hawkeye so relaxed...

Maes saw motion out of the corner of his eye and turned to look. His expression turned into an over-sized smile. "ROY! You made it! You've been keeping to yourself too much!" And that was as much as Maes would say on that matter. He didn't like to see people isolated and alone, but Roy hadn't seemed so bad off he needed a Maes-invasion.

He gestured to the greenhouse. "What plants would you like to help with? There are all sorts going into the ground. I'm guessing you wouldn't want to help me and Neji with tomatoes, since they're going into the ground in the shape of perfection itself! But there are potatoes and watermelons and garlic still not tended to!"

He raised his hand as a means of both acknowledgement of Maes' greeting, and the meaning of the words. True, he'd been keeping himself to himself, but sometimes he needed that time. Especially here, and awfully even with the arrival of Hawkeye, he'd needed time to think.

The mention of the other plants that needed tending to was sickening, but he offered his most charming smile, and pulled a hand up to look at his palm. "I'm sorry Hughes, these hands weren't made for gardening."

Maes rolled his eyes. "Yes, they were. They were made for working and serving, and if you don't get your holier-than-thou butt down here and join us I'm pouring punch down your back. Move it, Roy. Either join me, or join someone else on a project."

Armstrong apparently was late. ....HOw that happen he would not speak of, but at least he had arrived. He entered the greenhouse and smiled seeing all the people inside and working though he only recognized a few of them, mostly those from his world.
"Hughes, Hawkeye, Mustang!" He greeted them cheerfully.

"Come on in, Alex!" Maes called warmly. He gestured around at those already in the warehouse. "Skyler's working on turnips, Yuki's looking after the garlic, Neji here is helping with tomatoes, and Riza and Roy are looking after potatoes! There's still watermelon if you wanted to take a look at that, or you could join someone on their chosen plant!"

Armstrong sparkled faintly. "I'll plant the Watermelon then Hughes." He said cheerfully, happy to be doing something.

He looked a little alarmed when he turned up from the potatoes to Armstrong, but he gave a nod of acknowledgement. He thought about standing, but when he heard Maes instantly give his talk about plants he thought better of it.
