-Author Notes: Wow! You know, it actually feels really nice to stretch out my much-neglected azureshipping muscles. I hope everyone enjoys this festive bit of fluff! ^_^ (I'm sorry the ending is sort of flat; I didn't want to change the tone at the very end, and it was already getting pretty long. I know it's a little clichéd, but I thought it was cute.)

Reciprocity
-Christmas fic for lilshygrl25

She had one gift left.

It was sitting on her desk, a lavender bag stuffed with pale blue paper. She’d given her friends their gifts already; he’d seen her hand over the three neatly wrapped packages, heard the exclamations of delight the three geeks had given.

But she had one gift left.

It could be for one of the female friends she had at school, one of the giggly girls he’d seen her talk to when she wasn’t with her usual gang. It might be for a teacher, but he doubted that. He was fairly certain he knew who the recipient was, and when the bag was still sitting there when it was time to leave, he knew that his guess had been right.

He didn’t say anything; eventually he knew she’d come to him.

And as he bent down to slip on his shoe and tie the laces, he heard a feminine cough behind him. Wearing a half-smirk, he straightened and turned. “Mazaki. What do you want?”

Nervously, she adjusted the big, pink bow of her uniform. “I know that, in the past, we haven’t always gotten along. And - “

“And I don’t plan to change that any time soon, Mazaki. Goodbye.”

Her face scrunched up in annoyance. “No! W-wait, Kaiba; this is important.”

He raised one elegantly sculpted brow. “Important? Somehow I doubt that.”

“It’s… I got you a Christmas present.” She sighed and he congratulated himself on causing the barely reigned-in annoyance shining through her eyes. Blushing slightly, she held out the small, lavender bag. “Here. It’s… it’s for you.”

“Why the bother, Mazaki? I don’t want it.”

She glared at him and shoved the bag into his hands. “It’s a gesture of goodwill, Kaiba; the least you could do is accept it graciously. Here.”

“Why would you bother getting me a gift, Mazaki?” He gave her a cold smirk. “I didn’t reciprocate.”

She crossed her arms and put her weight on one foot, jutting her hip out in a brash, impatient stance. “I wouldn’t expect you to get me anything. That’s fine. But I decided that, since you probably weren’t going to get anything from anyone besides your brother, it might be nice if you knew someone - even an enemy - was thinking about you.”

“How touching,” he retorted scornfully. “You’ll be thinking about me?”

Her cheeks flushed a deeper pink. “That’s not what I meant, Kaiba. Look, you have your present, so - “

“You don’t want to watch me open it?”

“What?”

He smirked again. “I asked if you wanted to see me open it.”

“I don’t care,” she said with a shrug. He could tell she was embarrassed. “I… I didn’t put much thought into it, I only wanted to get you… something small.”

“You’re embarrassed. I’ll wait then, hmm?”

She looked away. “Whatever you want to do, Kaiba, I don’t care.”

He lifted the flap of his satchel and tucked the little bag inside. “I’ll just wait.” Anzu nodded, shuffling her feet a little, and it was obvious that she was ready to get away from him. “And now… Since you did something for me, it’s only fair I return the favor.”

“That’s really not necessary, Kaiba, and you don’t have to make fun of my gift by… by giving me anything.”

He took a step forward and her eyes widened at the invasion of her personal space. “Please, Mazaki. In the spirit of the season.”

She swallowed. He’d been aching for just such an opportunity for months - and there they were, alone, having civil conversation. She’d been in his thoughts more and more and since he already had the excuse of reciprocity, he intended to take full advantage of the situation.

“Please what, Kaiba?” She stepped backwards, into the wall of little cubbies. As soon as she realized she couldn’t go back any further she straightened up, a look of defiance on her pretty face.

“Since I was… kind and generous enough to accept your gift, I think - “

“What! Kind and generous?” she sputtered. “I’m the one who gave it to you, Kaiba, so - “

He held up a hand. “Don’t interrupt, Mazaki. As I said, since I accepted your gift, I think it’s only fair that you be equally as generous.”

“Generous?” One hand clenched into a fist and her eyes were sparking with anger. “Kaiba, you’re unbelievable! If I had known giving you a gift was going to be this much trouble I wouldn’t have bothered! Do you really think that you - “

“Just stop, Mazaki.” He surveyed her coolly for a moment, wondering the best way to broach the prickly topic of his feelings. She was lovely when she was angry, and he was feeling a bit flustered at the thought of suddenly getting what he’d wanted for so long. “I have a solution. Kiss me,” he said evenly, “and we’ll call that fair.”

“Wh-what?”

“Kiss me,” he said again, his voice low but confident. “And we’ll call it even.”

Her face was bright, burning red - but she didn’t hit him or make a face or give a reason why she’d be disgusted to do as he commanded. She only nodded, obviously surprised, and as he leaned in, one hand on her cheek, he decided that next year he’d get her a present, too.
