I'd known about fanfiction for at least a couple of years before I found the A/R fandom, but it wasn't until I became part of A/R fandom that I realized that (online)fandom could also mean people talking to each other online about shows, in addition to just writing fanfiction and getting feedback on it. Which sounds silly now that I've written it, but there it is. I'd read and written fanfic for variety of fandoms prior to finding A/R fandom, but A/R was the first one where I started interacting with the fandom beyond writing and commenting on fic ( ... )

I like that you can see authors' favorites lists on the site though. I've found a lot of good fic by checking the favorites of authors I like

I really LOVE that about SI. Once you find authors that have the same ideas as you, it's really great to find other treasures out there through them. And the ball keeps rolling that way somehow. I think LJ provides that as well, if not even better.

I also totally agree with you about the fandom. Some shows are just timeless and it's always great to find people with common interests. So I think that once we've all moved on, in ten years time or more, new people will move in to bsg (Finally finding the perks of the internet). The x files has been over for almost ten years, yet my fb is still flooded with messages and pics from comic con and everything else. Much like voyager I imagine (janeway and chakotay were totally hot btw). It will always be there, here or there, whenever we want a small refuge.

I guess because a/r was my first fandom, I don't really have too much else to compare it to. DA is very quiet on LJ, despite my attempts to get people to participate a little more. I wondered if it was because a lot of the fans of DA are European. Perhaps LJ is more of an American (and Russian!) thing.

Not interested in the lives of the actors? Is that you, Bugs? Ha! I think I'm a little spoilt with MM and EJO. They are two actors who I can never imagine making absolute fools of themselves in rl. I also see Bill and Laura as people. They aren't really characters (*snort*) to me. They truly exist in my mind (I know, I'm insane). For example, MM will never really look like Laura to me now, as MM is (naturally) growing old, and Laura died. She'll never be a truly old woman. She's dead. Bill's tottering around at his cabin, he's not campaigning for Latino movies.

I started watching BSG on january 2011 (Random Christmas gift = the miniserie) and finished around August, and then like many others, I started hunting for more! More what, I didn't really know...But more ( ... )

More what. Excellent point. I think I did the same thing! I had watched 4.0 and was waiting for 4.5 to come out in Aus, and was missing a/r, but I had no idea fanfic existed, so I wasn't searching for that! Just randomly searching... Thankfully, I found something!

I do sometimes get sad that I wasn't around for the whole fandom experience. As in, when the show was running, but I would have probably annoyed everyone anyway. "You so know the Commander and the President are frakking." I'd have posted this after the mini. ;)

Anything to stop the boredom of work, I say!

After getting sucked into bsg and becoming totally obsessed with Adama and Roslin I hopped on the internet right away looking for a community. Unfortunately my searches weren't very fruitful, but I did find the SI website. I probably spent about a month there in total bliss before I got restless and was in dire need of some recommendations: that's how I stumbled upon LJ. I've been here for about two weeks now and I feel as much a newbie and tech-challenged as I did on the first day here. But I was in awe when I saw that a lot of the authors from SI were here, it was almost as if I entered a world of celebs ;) (I am still in the process of giving feedback to all the wonderful fics, hold on folks ( ... )
