It's still 2/22, so here're the latest updates for our Two-Face RPG, "Split Decision!"

Feb 22, 2013 22:22

As my second post for 2/22 (posted at 22:22, military time!), I bring you the latest updates for the Two-Face RPG that Henchgirl has been working on (and I'm helping!). The progress has been slow and marred by all the same that have slowed down my own output here, but rest assured, it's still underway! It just may take a year. Or three. In the ( Read more... )

Speaking of Henchgirl and her all-too-rare contributions to this blog, I was just reminiscing about the time that she and I wrote a tag-team post tearing apart the AV Club's wrong-headed review of Two-Face: Parts I and II from Batman: The Animated Series. I was reminded of this because the reviews have just caught up with Mean Seasons, the fourth season episode with Calendar Girl, and it looks like the quality of the reviews haven't changed. Christ, the review COMPLETELY missed the point of the episode! To make matters worse, not one comment in the entire (depressingly small) talkbacks called Sava out for missing the point either ( ... )

Really, pretty much the only reason I started to read that feature on the A.V. Club was for the active comment section. (First a Riddler gimmick account appeared and started posing episode-related brainteasers to everyone, then this creepy Mr. Zsasz gimmick poster appeared and started arguing with him, then they developed this weird pseudo-friendship... it got rather fascinating, watching the two of them expound upon the social scene in Gotham City and rogue-related anecdotes.) They kept it up for a really long time, too, until one left and the other subsequently lost interest. Still, it was quite the ride.

The reviews themselves? Eh, I can take or leave 'em.

It's a shame that the reviews really are so very... meh. Especially since I *loved* the reviews by the original guy, who sadly had to go and get his ass fired from the AV Club for faking a review. The few reviews he wrote at the start, as I recall, were so much better, and he was one of my favorite reviewers there anyway, that it made his firing suck all the more. Can't say I blame the AV Club at all, but still, bummer all around.

"It just may take a year. Or three." Don't you mean TWO? Anyway, this looks unbelievably amazing! I can't wait for the full thing! :D

Heh, "it may take two years" is what I said about the Harvey Dent novel I've been writing. For seven years. Best not to jinx this one too. ;)

I love the cute little overworld sprites and recognizing the characters. I saw Killer Croc there, and I'm willing to bet that the fellow quoting Lewis Carroll is either Tweedledee or Tweedledum. I'm also in love with the mushrooms begging not to be eaten, and the design of the rogues' dungeons is gorgeous. The ethical decision-making aspect of the game is a nice touch and fits Harvey's motif perfectly. Also, I look forward to seeing poor Harvey stuck in a Wonderland-themed area. That's a truly inspired idea.

I wish you and Henchgirl the best of luck in working on this project. I'm certainly excited to see what eventually comes out of this. It's looking great! :)

You would indeed be correct about it being one of the Tweeds! It delights me to no end that Henchgirl chose the Norm Breyfogle image from Who's Who for them as well!

Thank you! We will keep you posted, rest assured! :D

If you guys need help for full-body shots of the rogues, just ask me! I've found quite a lot of them during my quest to punch up the DC Wiki profiles for the Bat-Rogues!

Though, I'm assuming you don't want pre-Crisis versions - else, you can just rip 'em out of the Who's Who profiles.

Thanks, but I can guarantee that even you wouldn't have been able to provide every single one, as there are one or two characters who are so obscure that I've literally looked through every single appearance of theirs and found nothing. Another big problem is that, for consistency's sake, we need all the characters looking circa late Bronze Age to early 90's, and some of the characters we're using just plain didn't EXIST then, so there's no art of them that corresponds to what we're doing. Besides, Henchgirl's already put many, many hours of work into making some awesome villain designs with the RPG maker's templates, so we should be okay.

I'm sure I've already asked this question somewhere along the line, but the answer eludes me - you are doing some sort of good side/bad side random generator for the coin, yes? Because that would seem to me to be a must.
I take it that the evil-to-good chart you show here is going to be some sort of onscreen indicator in the game itself? Like, 'oh, you just helped the old man; that pushes you to GOOD!' or 'you just pushed Humpty Dumpty off the building 'cause it was funny! What a JERK you are!' etc. (Only without the commentary, presumably.)
Ooh, I like the idea of Freeze in Arctic World! Nice little homage to Batman Returns. Which begs the question - is Pengers going to show up (in Arctic World or elsewhere), and if he is, are you at any point going to have him riding the Duck Vehicle? Please, please, please tell me you're going to have him riding the Duck Vehicle. Duck Vehicle needs more love ( ... )

I agree with you, but sadly, it's not going to work out. When I had originally planned this game, I wanted to essentially do a Choose Your Own Adventure book or text adventure that would force the reader to go along with whatever the coin said. But once Henchgirl bought the RPG maker, that became impossible, as it doesn't come equipped with anything that would allow that kind of randomization in gameplay ( ... )

Perhaps you could (unless this would also be impossible) include it as a 'third option' sort of thing. Like, every time there's only two options, there's a third button just saying 'Flip?' which chooses one of the two for you at random. I know, it sounds pretty similar to what I was just saying, but I find it hard to believe that there isn't some sort of button like that that could be put in; that's a pretty common thing, from what I've seen.
Or! Ooh, ooh! Here's an idea! There could be an option available at the start of the game - either you play it regularly, or you play it in 'Coin mode' - in which case, the text on the buttons is blacked out/obscured somehow, so you don't know just what option you're clicking! That makes every decision a completely random chance (unless you've played the game before and have a really good memory), effectively replicating Harvey's decision-making process. People who don't like it can play it the standard way; people who want the authentic Two-Face experience (or just see themselves as hardcore ( ... )
