A non-review of BATMAN: FORTUNATE SON (AKA "Batman vs the Devil's Music"), plus a question!

Jan 20, 2012 09:46

Note: This post isn't a review, but is in fact a very roundabout way to asking you all a geeky question for the sake of amusement. You were warned.

I wish I had the time and energy to devote a whole post--nay, a SERIES of posts--to the batshit insanity that is Batman: Fortunate Son.

Damn kids today and their ZZ Top.

Also, a better thing to talk about would be villainous theme songs. Because it would give me a chance to post Alice Cooper videos.

Funny thing is, ZZ Top at the peak of their career is actually a bit AFTER the music that Jones is drawing from throughout this story. As far as he seems to be concerned, rock music entirely existed from the 50's to the early 70's, (with Izaak/Cobain being one of the few "pure" exceptions so pure that he had to die). I'm sure there are those who won't disagree with this impression.

And what's stopping you, m'love? I know exactly what song you want to post. Go for it. You have my permission.

IT BEGINS:

Jervis:

Ivy (a-duh):

Fast-Talking Eddie:

Pretty much every second of Harley's life trying to avoid temptation:

Also Harley:

(In other news, FUCK YOU FOR DOING THIS SONG BADLY, GLEE. FUCK YOU!)

ALSO HARLEY BECAUSE DAYUM GIRL.

...okay, this is just getting silly. AND I HAVEN'T EVEN GOTTEN TO THE REST OF THE ROGUES GALLERY. ACK.

I will see that great Jervis choice and raise you this:

Also, oh hell, if you start bringing showtunes into this, I might not be able to resist finally going into how Sweeney Todd applies to Harvey and/or Mr. Freeze, depending on which actor is singing.

As for Eddie, cue up to 3:30:

I also kinda prefer Adam Pascal's version of the same (cue to 11:40) , until Idina Menzel ruins it with her nasallyness:

You forgot to post the 'rage of the beast' panel. It's one of the most memetic scenes from the comics.

I linked to it, but you're right, it deserves to be seen where it can't be avoided:

I didn't notice the link since I skimmed through the post but you are right it does need to be posted where everyone can see.

Also, yeah it has been a while. I needed to take a break so I took a hiatus from this site.

There is an unwritten, never posted, stricken from canon CATverse story about the Riddler with a broken heart called "96 Tears." I don't care how cheap it is, ? and the Mysterians fits. Plus that's the greatest heartbreak song ever written.

I also never finished or posted a story about Steph and Cassie showing up to work out in the Batcave at the same time and bonding over Stephanie's CDs when she teaches Cassie the dance routine to "Stop." Just like when Ops taught me.

In the same fic, it turned out that the only music Cassie knew was by the Beatles, because that was Barbara's favorite.

I used to have more ideas. Blah. I'm hot.

Also, Joker:

Joker loves Tom Lehrer, in fact.

So does Harley.

But mostly Joker.

So does...Luthor?

Squishy is not a fan.

I don't know who these match, but there must be someone:

Even Gotham gets its own song.

ALL the things? ALL THE THINGS!

There's something I have to say about KISS, by the way. The Joker is not a fan. I'm sure he admires their theatricality, and he gets the humor in some of their songs that most people miss. (Like "Going Blind," a beautiful, melancholy meditation on a doomed romance...that is rendered absurd by a single line near the end of the song that's delivered as such a throwaway it goes right over most people's heads.) And even though most of their songs are not meant to be humorous, they were one of the primary sources for Spinal Tap, which gives them cred. But I think they lost his respect with the album Psycho Circus (released a year before this book) if they hadn't already lost him with their immensely forgettable glam rock period after Unmasked. Psycho Circus was an attempt to get back to what made KISS fun--the classic style, the makeup, the original members. But none of them had any interest in working together; they only did this for teh moneys because their reunion tour had been so successful. ( ... )

Personally, i've always figured that the joker would be a big fan of the damned and the adicts

and we all know that the joker LOVES Prince and Oingo Boingo.

Heh, y'know, I always think about Harvey whenever I hear "Freewill" on the radio, but have never gotten enough thoughts together to write about it. Now that you mention it, I suppose it would be the ultimate anti-Harvey song!

As a huge Oingo Boingo fan who especially adores that song, I just can't bring myself to sully both it and Jervis, as incredibly tempting as it is. Thankfully, someone else did it for me!

My first thought about Ra's loving the Stones was to be incredulous before I realized that O'Neil himself made it canon that Ra's met Talia's mother at Woodstock.

The thought of Hugo Strange secretly being a huge ELO fanboy fills me with an odd sort of happiness.

Aside from those and the last two, I have not heard any of the others, and will rectify this later.
