Unfortunately, I had my medical abortion in the States, so the procedure may be a bit different for you. What I can tell you about my medical here in the States is this: I took the first pill (the mifepristone, which is what RU-486 is) on a Thursday. I was given the misoprostol to take home for vaginal insertion. I had a window of 24-72 hours to do so, and chose to do so on Saturday late morning. By that afternoon, I was up and around and completely functional. I had absolutely zero side effects from the mifepristone/RU-486 itself, and I think that's the case for most women. The function of the mifepristone is simply to stop progesterone from being utilized by the uterus, which doesn't usually cause too much trouble physically beyond ending the pregnancy. It's the second pills that tend to bring on the side effects, so if you could have a day or two off around the time of the second pills (if that's what your protocol will involve) that would be best. Unfortunately, the most important thing that I can tell you is that your mileage can, and will, vary. Every woman reacts differently to pregnancy, medical procedures, and medications. As a result, most of the information that we can give you about the difference between RU-486 and a procedure is very general and with a lot of broad descriptions. That said ( ... )
