Anti-Ultra-Orthodox-Ism

A couple of days ago, this article about extreme gender separation becoming more common in Israel caught my eye, and I have to admit, I was extraordinarily disappointed. My Jewish upbringing has always been rather liberal, so seeing the Chabad movement and its separation of genders was baffling to me, and then "what the fuck were you thinking" ( Read more... )

Um. Fer serious? The Lubavitchers and Chabad types have always been just as fanatical and oppressive and bigoted and nasty as their directly equivalent Muslims and Christians. Have you seen this? And it's not just misogyny, either-not by a long shot. Get a load of this. And this. And this. And this. And this. And this. And this. And this. Shall I go on? I certainly can. I am utterly baffled how this could possibly be such a shocking revelation to you. Really?

It's not so much shocking as it is disappointing that it's apparently so widespread and growing. I can see the crazy shit in Kiryas Joel, but I would have at least liked to think Israel would know better, considering Golda Meir and Tzipi Livin and all. Apparently not.

I'm especially amazed there are as many ultra-Orthodox IN Israel considering the widespread rejection of the nation's existence since there is no third Temple. o_o

I'm jewish, myself.. and I will never truly understand jews.

Basically, their motto is: "Tradition at all costs- and no, this will never change."

But putting a religious belief system before basic human rights is just wrong.

It's partly why I rejected judaism - and all other religions.

They never change.. not even after thousands of years. And that frightens me.

There are kind and warm hearted people amongst the orthodox, for sure. It's their unflinching and unquestioning devotion and subservience to bizarre and outdated dogmas and traditions that is destroying their humanity. This is also one of the factors that motivated me to quit the shtetl two years ago. There is nothing "holy" about subjugating women or any of the other ills you mentioned. Very sad. :(

Remember, it is not all orthdox jews who believe this is the way to treata woman. Only these fanatics. They believe it is a matter of modesty. Womenhave to be modest, but not men. They throw rocks and terrorize elementary school girls ib Israel because the school is modern orthodox and do not adhere to these peoples rigid, outdated standards that are getting more and more like the Taliban every day. There are women in their neighborhoods in Israel wearing burkas. It is time they woke up. They are going to cause a civil war in Israel. Not the arabs.
