Yesterday was the first time I've ever bought saffron; a recipe Carl wanted to try called for it.

All I have to say is, holy shit. $4?? For a gram?? Am I buying saffron at that price or cocaine?! :: laugh ::

Apparently you haven't bought saffron before lol

And uh.. LOL at least you should feel better that coca costs much more?

Bruce said be careful with the saffron cause you only need a hair of it before it overpowers.

Yeah, saffron is basically crocus pollen, and they have to scrape it off of stamens of a very specific type of crocus, which only bloom at a specific time of year. Even then, the yield is very tiny. I don’t say I agree with the insane price of saffron, but I can certainly understand it.

Saffron is the stamen, not the pollen. But the crocuses (croci?) and the stamens have to be harvested BY HAND, all within something like 2 weeks.

Well, at least I remembered it came from the saffron crocus, and from the male sex organs of the plant. So, do I get partial credit?

to be precise, the yield is three threads of saffron per flower, and each plant only produces one flower. all quite labor intensive.

I was thinking of making that one of these nights... It sounded really good from what I read in my cook book.
