Yesterday was the first time I've ever bought saffron; a recipe Carl wanted to try called for it.

All I have to say is, holy shit. $4?? For a gram?? Am I buying saffron at that price or cocaine?! :: laugh ::

Oh honey, cocaine would be much more expensive. *pats you on the head* I want to be invited over for dinner experiments! *sad puppy eyes*

So stop over....lol. I used wayyyyy to much saffron in the rice. But fortunately the chicken and spicey sauce masked the rice nicely.

Trader Joe's has that too - and much cheaper than Whole Foods. Delicious stuff, worth every penny, goes a long way. A lot of stuff labeled "saffron" (e.g. "saffron rice") is just turmeric for coloring, though. :)

I have never cooked with saffron before. I used way too much in the rice. But I was fortunate that the chicken and sauce masked the rice well.

Yeah, saffron's cheap. A gram of the other stuff would cost ~$50. Not that I would know.

Saffron is one of those ingredients. You know. One of those ingredients.

It is incredibly worth every penny spent, and you only need very very very very very very very little of it for any given dish.
