Alive, yes, but contained and unable to grow beyond their prisons. They both die, just one method is more tedious and miserable.

There are windowsill gardens you can put them in. They won't die as long as you take care of them.

They'll die eventually. Plants die, fantasies are proven false, the shadows on the wall are shown to be nothing more than shadows. That's just how it is.
