Gojyo hadn't really expected anyone to come. He'd explored a little of this place with Hazel, but there were too many people around, and it scared him, so he'd gone back to the room he'd woken up in. He was hungry, and a little cold, but he knew Jien would find him. He always did, even when he got lost in the forest.
He looked up at the knock, surprised, before getting to his feet. Maybe this man really was bringing him food, and wasn't just saying so. He shouldn't trust him though, because he knew he'd never met him before and Jien had told him not to trust strangers.
But he was really hungry now.
Gojyo walked over to the door and opened it a crack, then a little wider when he noticed something that at least looked like food. "You found me!"
"I did," Hakkai agreed. It had been hard to tell on the computer screen, but in person it was obvious Gojyo was tiny. His height was about average for a five-year old, but he was so thin, all knees and elbows, it made him look even smaller than he really was. If Jien hadn't already killed the woman who Gojyo considered his mother, Hakkai would have begun searching for her then and there at the sight of his friend's tiny, almost emaciated appearance
( ... )
Gojyo stared at the food, wanting to grab it and start eating right away. He didn't even care what kind of food it was. He stopped himself, though, because no one ever gave him anything, not like that. Maybe this man wanted help with something? He frowned, just a little, before pushing open the door, quickly taking a few steps back so he'd be at a safe distance.
"Thanks," he said, remembering suddenly that he should be polite. He absently played with the hem of his sweater, nervously. Hakkai would explain what he wanted, and then maybe he could eat. It didn't smell very good, but he hadn't found any food since he got there.
"Ah, like I said, it doesn't taste very good," Hakkai said, tilting his head and staring at Gojyo curiously, more than a little concerned. What was he waiting for? "But it will fill you up so you won't be hungry anymore." He crouched down, uncomfortable towering so far over the tiny boy his friend had become. "Please take it, though," he added, still holding out the food towards Gojyo.
Gojyo hesitated a moment longer, before quickly stepping forward, grabbing the food. He hurried back again, looking down at the food in his hands before glancing at Hakkai again. This was really for him? He picked up some of the snake, trying it cautiously.
"Why're you giving me this?" he asked, still confused.
