Because I always feed you. "Because you're hungry." Oh, Gojyo... Hand empty, Hakkai wrapped his good arm around his knees and remained in his crouch, trying not to stare and mostly succeeding.

Gojyo sat down on the floor, placing the food in his lap. He looked at it again, and tried some more snake. It really wasn't very good, but he was hungry enough that he didn't care. He tried to eat properly -- mom always got angry when he didn't -- but after a few moments he forgot, grabbing snake with one hand and meal bars with the other, mouth open as he chewed, though he barely remembered to do so before swallowing.

How long had Hakkai slept? How long had it been since Gojyo last ate? "Please slow down, Gojyo," he said, worried at the speed at which the little one was eating. "No one's going to take it away from you." What he sometimes said in jest to Goku to keep him from choking himself (even though it wasn't usually entirely true, given Gojyo's penchant for stealing food from under the young man's nose out of spite) he was saying with heartbreaking seriousness now.

Gojyo looked up at him, eyes widening for a moment, before he dropped the food in his hands and slowed down, eating at a more normal pace. He even made sure he took the time to chew, because he didn't want to make this man angry. "What kinda food's this?" he asked after a moment, confused because it didn't really taste like food.

"Ah, some of it's snake," Hakkai explained, almost sorry he'd said anything at all after the frightened look Gojyo had given him. But he'd slowed down a little and was actually chewing now, so he thought it might almost be a fair trade-off. "The thing in the wrapper tastes like cardboard, but seems very nutritious. It's usually all there is to eat, actually."
