The Classic Loco Moco

Nov 05, 2012 16:12

Over the years, my mom has accumulated a number of funny kitchen gadgets. One of my favourites and probably the first one I ever used on a regular basis, is this hamburger patty press. It shapes 4 oz of ground meat into a perfect patty.

ETA: You can find a similar hamburger patty press at Bed, Bath and Beyond.

It IS cute, isn't it? Thank you for the compliment on the meals. If I stay IN and cook, I don't spend money. So, there's a method to my cooking madness. :)

The stories behind the name vary:

The most probable origin of the name is that "loco" is a variation of "local," while "moco" was added simply because it rhymed.

There's another story here as to the origin.

Love the look of this - I love all the things... coleslaw, fried egg, patty... mm, I too am curious about the name though... it's not something I've heard of before I don't think. I was confused for a second when you mentioned St. Hubert... it's a brand of margarine here :D

St. Hubert is a Quebec based company ... they also make a gravy that's popular on top of the fries and cheese curd to make poutine. The name loco moco has various explanations. A good site with more info is here.

It's actually a very inexpensive press and some of the shiny spray covering has rubbed off. But it IS cute. :)

I have so many kitchen gadgets, I am rarely surprised by what I see, but this is something completely new! Thank you for giving me a new present idea for myself. The dish looks fabulous. Sissi (http://www.withaglass.com)

The press is nicer looking than those cheap plastic presses you can buy these days. Though I'm sure it was pretty cheap to start with as it's pretty light weight. I can guess where my mom probably picked it up. The store is still open.
