The Classic Loco Moco

Over the years, my mom has accumulated a number of funny kitchen gadgets. One of my favourites and probably the first one I ever used on a regular basis, is this hamburger patty press. It shapes 4 oz of ground meat into a perfect patty.

I used the press this afternoon to make the hamburger patties for the classic Loco Moco (pronounced loh-koh moh-koh). The possible origins of the name may be found by clicking on the link. The Wikipedia article for this dish is also pretty interesting.





Classic Loco Moco (serves 1)

1 cup cooked sushi rice
1 4 oz hamburger patty, pan fried
1 large egg, sunny side up or over easy
1/4 cup brown (beef) gravy, home made or your favourite canned brand *
1 serving of creamy coleslaw**

* I used St.Hubert cause that's what they had when I went shopping
** In Hawaii it's served with a scoop of macaroni salad but I figured the coleslaw was a bit healthier
Note: 1/2 a cup of cooked rice is plenty for most people. :)

Place the cooked rice on a flat plate. Spoon some brown gravy over the rice. Place the hamburger patty and the fried egg over the rice spooning some more gravy over the top. Add a scoop of creamy coleslaw to the plate. Take out your knife and fork and go to town.
