I loved that series. Well, actually, I only read Ruby in the Smoke, and Tiger in the Well, but I loved them.

When I found out this movie existed, I was excited -- and that was BEFORE I started watching Doctor Who. It was probably a year or so later, after Matt Smith had come on the scene that I finally saw it. It was very entertaining.

I quite liked Tin Princess too! Tiger in the Well was my favourite of the Sally books though I think. Really dense in terms of Pullman's political stuff, but enjoyable.

I only read the books because of placebetween and because one day I planned to watch the Billie Piper/Matt Smith version, though I think I enjoyed the books (and my amusing mental images) much more.

Should someone who's never heard of this before read the books first or watch the series first?

HMMM. I enjoyed the books more, and I got the lulz of picturing Billie Piper and Matt Smith in their roles anyway (which is part of what made me enjoy the books). Plus, my two favourite books in the series are the 3rd and 4th, which weren't made into movies.

How many books are there total? Also, who wrote them?

4, and they're Phillip Pullman, and they're very... Pullman. So, IDK, you can usually see his ~agenda~, whatever that agenda may be, throuhg his writing. Or at least you could in books 3 and 4 more clearly, which might be why I liked them more. Most of them are pretty short.

I remember trying to read Ruby in the Smoke back when I was 12-ish, but it didn't ~do it~ for me because I never finished. lol. Idk. I think twelve year old me was way more into YA melodrama books.

I don't think I would've liked Pullman's writing as a kid. As an adult I found it interesting because I could analyze his ~agenda~ as a critical reader, but as a kid I think I would've just found it really dull. I didn't get into the Sally Lockhart books until around book 3 though.
