Rant, rant, rant. And a poll!

I really do wish that people who don't know the difference between it's and its would just stop using it's altogether. Just write out it is and when that doesn't work in the sentence, put its. I mean, that's really all there is to it.

That and led (hint: if you're writing "lead" and pronouncing it like "led", then you're talking about a mineral Read more... )

ranting is an underrated art form, poll

My answer to your TV question should not come as a shock.

While I enjoyed Dodgeball, and have a special place in my heart for Wild at Heart, I had to choose Inventing the Abbotts because of my ♥ for Joaquin.

OMG I AM otherwise knowledgeable about the English language and I write lead for led... *is ashamed*

Oh man, I really hooked you good, didn't I? *g*

Dodgeball was actually one of those things where I belonged to a DVD club and didn't cancel the order in time, I've always assumed that it would suck, but maybe not, huh?

I have the lead/led thing so ingrained in my head that I can't read a sentence containing "lead" and not draw out the E sound (because how often do people really mean the mineral?) and it just sours me on otherwise good authors. I haven't noticed you doing it in your posts, though.

I think you should watch Big Love and let me know how it is. ;) I really can't stand Bill Paxton in the least, but I downloaded S1 sometime last summer because I heard it was good, and then never got around to watching it. And then I lost it on my broken computer, so I don't know if it's worth trying to track it down again. So! I think you should watch it and let me know. ;)

Also, if I ever get around to making my own Top 5 Favorite/Guilty Pleasure movies list, Mean Girls is definitely going on the guilty pleasure list. I've watched it way more times than I should probably admit to, but come on! It has Casey Gant! And Lilly! And other things, too. :p

I've been kind of avoiding Big Love because I've tried to get into it, but something about how religious it is (or must be) turns me off. Can't say that I share the Bill Paxton dislike, though. He was Chet!

I get the feeling that Mean Girls wouldn't be on my guilty pleasures list because my definition of it is a movie that you like even though you know it's bad. Oh, and it has to be accompanied by at least a modicum of embarrassment at a) even admitting to having seen it in the first place, b) admitting to having seen it several times and c) admitting to actually liking it. A movie has to walk a very fine line to be a guilty pleasure movie for me. Ever After, 10 Things I Hate About You and Clueless just aren't cutting it, because I'm not at all embarrassed about liking them.

Spaced, _jems_!! Now that Green Wing is over, you must watch Spaced! See Mark Heap so much skinnier that you don't even recognize him until he speaks in that unmistakeable voice! See him say the line in my icon! See more homages/references than you can even get! You will love it.

And you haven't seen Sin City? See it, it's fantastic! You'll want to 'cap it immediately. Mean Girls is winning, I see, and that's good too.

I tried to get into Spaced already, but it really didn't grab me in the first couple of episodes and then I just barely paid attention to the rest of season 1. I figure I have to rewatch the whole thing.

The problem with Sin City at this exact moment is that I'm pretty sure my brother still has it...four months or so after he borrowed it.

I love it when you make posts about spelling and grammar. Even though I get paranoid that I make the same mistakes. But I also learn from them! and that's what matters!

Have you never seen the second season of Popular? Or are some of your options rewatces? I loved the first season, but I got bored with the second and gave up on it.

Dude, you really really should see Igby Goes Down. It's one of those movies that fandomly people just seem to love. Also it kicks all kinds of ass. Though, I say that having not seen it in years and years, so I could be wrong. *g* But there are a couple of really good movies on that list, so, tough choice. DECISIONS, DECISIONS.

It kills me that the it's/its thing just seems to be getting progressively worse. Like, people are seeing the wrong usage so much that they just copy it instinctively.

I saw the second season of Popular on Swedish TV, but I'm not sure if I've seen every episode. That one would be basically a rewatch, but also an excuse to clear up some space on my external hard drive. The good thing about rewatching, of course, is the fact that you don't really have to be a slave to the screen for an hour.

I actually made the questions check boxes so that people wouldn't have to feel they were in a reenactment of Sophie's Choice. I figured the top movies would come out on top anyway.

I know I make a lot of grammatical mistakes, and that bothers me, but I at least know the difference between it's and its. I mean, that one's not that hard! Though I'm sure I get it wrong accidentally sometimes.

Like, people are seeing the wrong usage so much that they just copy it instinctively.

Yeah, that's such a bad problem. I know I do that all the time. I miss having Angie around because she used to viciously assault my spelling and grammar. It was painful in the short term, but good in the long run!

The good thing about rewatching, of course, is the fact that you don't really have to be a slave to the screen for an hour.Hee! I wish I could multi-task like that. If I start doing something else I completely stop paying attention to the show. My brain just can't handle listening to one thing while thinking about something else. Unless the something else doesn't actually take any brain power. Either way, unless I'm trying to get through an episode that I don't actually like, just for the sake of a complete rewatch, I don't do ( ... )

So many people seem to have problems with it's/its and I think it comes from most people's ingrained idea that the apostrophe is always used possessively, like in "Steph's comment". But that's not always true, not by a long shot. Hers is another word people don't seem to realize shouldn't have an apostrophe.

I miss having Angie around because she used to viciously assault my spelling and grammar.
I didn't know you were such a masochist. ;-)

Hee! I wish I could multi-task like that.
As long as it's something I've seen before, I can watch a movie while reading a book. I'll just tune into the movie when the book drags or when I know something good's coming up.

Jason Bateman's in it?! Oh, that is very good news. Very good news indeed.

Oh man... you've picked two of my biggest grammar pet peeves! I don't know what it is about the lead/led problem, either, because it seems to have actually gotten *worse* in the last year or so... and I've even seen it crop up from people I really thought would know better!

I think the lead thing could possibly be a confusion over the different pronunciations of the word depending on what you're referring to. Or people simply don't know that led is a word. I don't know.
