I really do wish that people who don't know the difference between it's and its would just stop using it's altogether. Just write out it is and when that doesn't work in the sentence, put its. I mean, that's really all there is to it.
That and led (hint: if you're writing "lead" and pronouncing it like "led", then you're talking about

Also, I do have to confess that it took me years to be comfortable with its and it's. That and spelling definitely!

I think that it's kind of an easy rule: it's is a contraction of it is, and unless you can separate it into those two words you should be writing its. That's not to say I haven't made the mistake myself, but I don't do it ALL THE TIME.
