On notice: work, LJ, Buffy picspams

So, I'm translating Peep Show and I can't figure out what Jeremy means when he calls Mark "the ghost at the feast". I'm figuring it's some kind of idiom and from the context I'd guess it could refer to someone being bitter or unhappy with their lot in life. Maybe? Can anyone help?

Having never seen Peep Show, I can't be sure but 'the ghost at the feast' is most likely a Macbeth reference. Someone who spoils an event by forcing memories of an unfortunate action or incident.

I figured it was Shakespeare, though I couldn't pinpoint the play, so thanks. It's hard to translate something like that when you can't think of a similar idiom. I think I'll just vague it up and go for a "he's just a killjoy" type translation.

I was just thinking the other day how weird it was that I've never picspammed Buffy when I picspam VM almost weekly. it's prolly bc it's long gone...but I would luv for you to do one:)

Your picspams are always a delight so I'll be eager to see what you come up with. And I agree - the phrase is probably Shakespearean but I too haven't seen the show you are referencing.

Well, that's assuming I actually come up with something. It ain't easy because there's so much to choose from.

The initial Googling I did indicated immediately that it was Shakespeare, but no one actually bothered to tell me what it meant, so even knowing it was Shakespeare wasn't very helpful because it seems to be a common expression in Britain. Which is where the show's from, which might be why you haven't seen it. =)

Well I would interpret it to mean that even when people are merry making, feasting, there is something hanging over them. A presence that should be there that is missing, someone everyone is thinking about, something heavy or foreboding in the air. Something like that. I would have to see the context to be more precise.

About the post editing, do you have the extension LJ Hook installed? Because in that there is a setting that sets all of the entries you make to Public, so maybe that's it? It did it to me a while ago and I couldn't figure out what was wrong until I decided to check its settings for something else and saw that.

I do! But there must still be something wonky with the update thing, because it never used to change the setting before. But now I can maybe possibly conceivably disable it! Awesome!
